Last summer Dyche's job in the transfer market was to do what Malky was unable to do: create a good-sized squad. This summer his job is surely to do what Malky and BR (albeit both with considerable help from our scouting department) managed: bring in rough diamonds in the £100-250k range. I don't think we would have been able to attract those sorts of players last summer, because from the outside it looked for all the world as if we would be in League One in August.
You would hope that Ian Woan would know something of the squad and younger hopefuls. Well made points NNW
Very little has been heard about Ian Woan since SD brought him in, and most of the comments at that stage were negative, along the lines of getting your best friend was not a good idea. I suspect that behind the scenes the two of them have agreed the way that they think they can take the club forward and it has been far more successful than most of us can believe. While SD has been the face and voice at Watford, I think that IW also deserves praise for his contribution.
He does seem to be very involved...they're always together on the touchline and he seems very much part of the team, in his own quiet way ...definitely he will have contributed a heap, from what i've seen
The most important thing with backroom staff is how they operate as a cohesive unit. Take Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, or Boothroyd and Burkinshaw. Combinations far, far greater than the sum of their parts. Similarly, the danger with a manager bringing in his mates isn't that he'll bring in mediocre staff. After all, if the manager fails badly, he'll struggle to get another managerial role, which puts his trusted lieutenants in an equally weak position. The danger is that when the manager moves on, his mates follow him and the club loses off-pitch continuity.
that would be a very real worry, if we go on recent history...though Ian Woan might fancy the job when the time comes..after all, SD was a mate of MM, but he decided to stay and have a go...so very glad he did!
SD wasn't here as a direct result of being MM's mate though. It's part of the reason I'm hoping Eustace gets onto the coaching staff soon (unless I've missed something and it's officially happened?). The only way he would leave us is if we drop him for a prolonged period and he isn't ready to hang up his boots.
no he didn't, but he could easily have gone with MM as a mate. But yep, it would seem a natural progression for Eustace, he's not on the coaching staff yet, but he's done his badges now, so it has to be the next step i'd have thought.
My guess with Eustace is that he will want to carry on playing as long as he can, but one nasty injury could tell him it is time to go on to coaching.
Good to see that there will be a game in early August that many will want to see. http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/9678664.Watford_to_play_Spurs_for_Doyley_testimonial/
spurs are an interesting choice..i'd have thought he'd have gone for QPR lol...though when i met him, he did say he was disappointed that we'd drawn Spurs in the FA Cup coz he'd wanted to play them for his Testimonial...i guess it made no difference in the end...
I know i already said this yesterday but just to make it official http://www.watfordfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10400~2755071,00.html No serious injury for Hogg.
I'm guessing Spurs were the club he supported as a wee lad 50-odd years ago? Either way, they make a lot of sense as a club to pick. Although I wonder if the door is open for a few ex-Horns to make cameos?
oooh yes, that'd be very good! Hmm, i wonder who we might not want to see back...that might come back!
I believe that Joe Kinnear was around the ground Saturday and have read that he was suggesting that Robbo might be back at Watford next season. I think that he is related in some way so might know something.
BR's career was prematurely ended by injury, Gianluca Vialli would probably insist on being paid, and Dave Bassett is pushing 70. We love everyone else that I can think of Micky Quinn in goal?
Watford Rumours ‏ @Watford_Rumours Scott Loach was in the Sun's team of the weekend. Good, he deserved that
