I can see why a lot of Spurs fans are pissed off. He ****ed you lot with all this speculation, and it reminds me of what McCarthy did to us when he was seduced with the Ireland job. But boys, if you get CL football two seasons on the bounce, who wouldn't be happy. If it was the Lions, I'd be having a hands free orgasm.
All that might have been true in the past when England played friendlies and the players were there for the love, receiving very little money. Now it is about the World Cup and the European Cup it's about the hype that surrounds these competitions and the mega bucks they generate. Sponsers, World Cup committees, and players and managers all use these events to further their careers and generate income. Can you be proud to be part of a competition where the organisers are very suspect to say the least. I'm not that keen on nationalism and war substitutes anyway to be honest. On top of all that the recent performances of England in these competitions has hardly been inspiring. I love the game of football (amongst many other things) and to enjoy the game you need to be committed to wanting somebody to win. For me that is Tottenham Hotspur they provide my weekly entertainment and for me Spurs come first. England? if they feel they can produce some entertaining football then let me know I'll give it a look. Other than that I have better things to do than join in some pseudo national fervour thanks very much.
Sorry Chirpy, but for me it's not a matter of which job is bigger or even which Redknapp would prefer. We're his current employers and Levy stuck by him during a lot of **** this season, including a health scare and a court case which brought his integrity into question. Redknapp should've repaid that loyalty with some of his own and just flatly refused to discuss the national team job publicly, even if he wanted to be considered for it. He clearly took his eye off the ball and unsettled the squad with his comments and attitude. He's done a very good job for us, overall, but his shortcomings are the same ones that people have mentioned for quite some time. He doesn't appear to be learning from his mistakes, whether they involve on-pitch decisions or media interactions.
Four words Spurf: World Cup Winner's medal. As much as EUFA or the Olympics would like us to believe otherwise, it is the biggest show on earth and only national sides can win it. You CAN be proud to be English and not right wing (which is what, I think, you are trying to say) but to take Nationalism and replace it with regionalism or even worse become part of some amorphous whole made up of parts that have little in common, makes no sense at all. Nationalism, if channelled in the right direction, can be a force for good. Being ashamed of who we are and where we come from is a national disease, (although we seem to celebrate other cultures with gay abandon.) IT may not be "progressive" but I am an Englishman, a tollerant (just) right of centre Englishman and I don't need a war or a substitute war to remind me!
The thing is, if we finish fourth but the Chavlings win the CL final, how long will it take ebfore we're sick and bloody tired of him bringing that up as the reason we won't be in next season's competition, when we could be in prime position to finish third right now instead of having a marginal advantage in finishing fourth?
PNP. He refused to comment on the job time and time again. As soon as the speculation is over we win. Coincidence?
He didn't refuse, Chirpy. He talked about it being a job that no Englishman could turn down. He's English. That leaves little doubt as to whether he'd take it or not.
Chirpy we know we are not at one when it comes to politics but on Spurs we often agree and we are always on the same side. We have both just shown how following a national side brings in politics and that's another reason for me to be cool about it. I can enjoy being English provided I celebrate individuals and not national institutions.
Stay. Can't see how anyone else would have done or would do better than he has with the squad. Given the stadium, upper end of midtable is about where you might expect for Spurs. Even missing out this year, I can't see anyone else (available) having done better. But there are a lot of negatives. First, he should have said he had no interest in the England job, even if that wasn't true. Either that, or resigned. You owe it to your club and your fans not to sow uncertainty. Fact is Spurs were doing great till Capello resigned. Then it all went south. He talks too much, and sometimes unwisely. His tactics and choices are often off the mark. But: he makes up for all of that (well, except not taking himself out of the running for the England job, a one off, presumably) by his ability to get his teams pulling together and having fun. His players like him so much that they're playing for less than they could get elsewhere, which is really high praise.
So would I, no matter who I was managing. It is the pinnacle of an English manager's career and any English manager would tell you the same. You are being naive if you can't see that. Harry told the press what Roy Hodgson told them, probably less. If the FA had been more decisive, all this would be academic and there would have been no speculation. The press campaign for Harry was not orchestrated by him, it was staged by a 24 media that is looking for something to say 24/7 and Harry was a good story.
As I said earlier Chirpy, whether he wanted the job or not was irrelevant. Making it public knowledge was disrespectful and disloyal.
Scenario... Lets say Hogdson gets the job and lets say he messes-up within Months. Within months of taken the job, the press/media get on his back and lets say he resigns.. In the mean time Spurs have secured 4th place. Harry is still here and we are enjoying Champions League football again,., England come calling., only now, there is only one real candidate.. Harry. All this is hypothetical, I wouldn't wise this set of circumstances on anyboby, but if they were to happen., I think Harry would be 'off quicker then a fiddlers elbow'.... Thats why I now have 'reservations' about Harry. Can his heart ever truely be with Spurs following the real events of the past 2 Months., I'm on the fence but I'm about to fall.
I don't care about his heart, as long as he has us winning I will be happy. And i'm not so sure he would be so keen to jump ship anymore, not after being effectively shunned this time. If the FA don't think he is the right man for the job now, why should he think they have confidence in him in 6-12 months time.
Because coming second in a race of two for the post as England Manager is not being shunned., Its unfortunate, for him maybe., but its certainly not a personal snub.
I think after seeing what the press do to Uncle Woy if he screws up (let's face it the odds aren't good) he may have second thoughts.
