To claim anyone has been 'magnificent 'in our defence is ridiculous. We've conceded a **** load of goals!! That's like saying Torres has been 'magnificent' this season. The Spaniard has played quite well but he has'nt scored goals and at the end of the day that's what counts. The same goes for ALL our defenders.
Oh boy you are thick. What you use is not science. You are using indicators in a completely uncontrolled environment with each subject having different external factors. (opponents played, CB matched with, time of the season played, form of the team overall, missing players in other parts of the team...) Since you are claiming you are hot on science you should know that "correlation == causation" is a logical fallacy, no? Also i asked you if Vermaelen was a better defender this year, not overall, your stats prove nothing but how thick you are.
Yes its an uncontrolled enviroment. It's a football match. One uses these statistics as indicators. Read this. I know its longer and more complex than the 'Hungry Hungry Caterpillar' but I think you'll get the jist. http://www.7amkickoff.com/2012/arsenal-defensive-conversion-at-five-year-low/
You use selective statistics and logical fallacies. That has ****-all to do with science or the scientific method.
I didn't contest that our defense is "good enough". I contested your claim that Vermaelen was better than Kos this season. Anyone who's actually watched the matches, has seen the performances of the two will know that is simply not true.
You can contest it all you like. But it does'nt change anything. so to summarize: 1. We concede less when Vermaelen plays 2. Our defence has been the worst in Wengers tenure over the last two seasons. (and Laurent Koscielney has played more games in that time than any of our other defenders in that time).
this was covered a while back with the "correlation = causation" fallacy... Wouldn't expect you to comprehend that.
we concede less when vermaelen plays because him and koscielny have a good understanding. also, when vermaelen has played, we have had most of our first team fully fit, while most of koscielny's matches were with a hodge-podge patched together side with multiple injuries all over the board.
Here is a stat that demonstrates the complete irrelevance of your statistic: The Man Utd - Arsenal game accounts for 18% of our goals conceded this year. Eighteen percent. One single game. That is on a patch when Arsenal had shortages all over the field, and played the worst as a team in nearly half a century. Try to actually watch a few games and base your opinion on Kocielny on that.
I dont think you understand. Statistics is the marmite science. You either love them or distrust them. Either way though an argument backed with some statsistics is exponentially more meaningful than the garbage you spew which has nothing behind if other than your own blind faith.
Just refer to the match threads, and see how many Vermaelen mistakes are mentioned. If I had the material recorded i would make a combined clip. He has made more defensive mistakes this season than the rest of the back 4 combined, both when he played as a CB and a LB. This was a bad season for him. Blind faith? What have I claimed that is blind faith. I'm actually judging Koscielny on performance and i can cite countless severe defensive mistakes Vermaelen has made this season, you are basing your opinion on Kos not on performance but on a statistic that relies on a logical fallacy. I repeat. 1 game accounts for 18% of the goals conceded this year. That alone should tell you how much of a joke your stat is.
its not blind faith, its called watching the matches and seeing what the players do. stats do have some relevance, but on there own you can probably say that hernandez (at man utd) is better than rooney. but then you watch the matches and realise this is not the case. you have to bring stats into context, which is what gent and i have been trying to do for you, but you just go and say that we concede less when vermaelen plays and more when koscielny does, ignoring all other variables in your "science".
from 2010/11 season: Squillaci and Djourou together at CB: Minutes - 800 Conceded - 8 Mins per goal - 100 Squillaci and Koscielny together at CB: Minutes - 910 Conceded - 14 Mins per goal - 65 Thus, I have proved, using stats, that Djourou is better than Koscielny. Disagree with me now.
****, you even proved that Squillaci and Djorou should be starting for us instead of Kos and Vermaelen. Damn you! Our only hope is that Wenger doesn't see this brilliant bit of science.
We all watch the players but some of us apparently see different things. Fans are fickle and opinions change very very quickley. One minute Gibbs is the next Ashley Cole the next minute he's the next Titus Bramble. If a striker does not score goals he is not performing well. If a defender concedes a ****load you have to say he also is'nt performing. There are other variables but this is why I've been very specific in saying I think Vermaelen is a better 'defender' as opposed to 'player'.(as well as providing some Opta sourced statistics)
