Ezekiel Fryers – Newcastle interested in 19 year-old defender

The 19 year-old can play center-back or left back, and he has already appeared six times for the Manchester United first team.

The 6′ tall younger was born and bred in Manchester and United is the only club he’s played for.

Fryers suffered a serious knee injury last season that kept him out for the whole season, but the lad came back and made his debut in the League Cup in September of last year.

The Mirror is reporting that he has been unable to agree a new deal with Manchester, and that was not unlike the case of Ravel Morrison, whom Newcastle were interested in last January, but the Magpies eventually pulled out of the deal, and he was signed by West Ham.

Ezekial’s contract runs out on June 30th, and Newcastle are hopping to sign the player, but they will need to pay some compensation to Manchester United for the youngster, since he is under 24.

Fryers has played for the England U16, U17 and 10 times for the U19 team, and he is the type of player Newcastle are always looking for, who could be brought to Tyneside, and his skills developed at Newcastle.

This is how the lad is described on the Manchester United web-site:

“Zeki Fryers is a tall and athletic left-sided full-back, strong defensively but also – as with most modern full-backs – likes to get forward and help out in attack. He has pace in abundance and is tough in the tackle. His first season as an Academy scholar was disrupted by injury, but he finished the season strongly and will look to exert his experience during his second season with the Under-18s.”

“Zeki, who has been capped at England youth level, has also stepped up to United’s Reserves, and will look to really make his mark at this level in 2011/2012 after more injury problems last term. At the start of the campaign, he figured in both Warren Joyce’s side and Paul McGuinness’ academy outfit as an over-aged player before pulling off something of a coup by featuring in a third of the club’s teams and the one he will have dreamed about as a youngster.”

“The Carling Cup debut at Leeds, playing in the middle of defence, was a baptism of fire that he handled expertly with a flawless display at Elland Road. Another outing, this time at left-back against Aldershot, was followed by a late Champions League appearance in the win over Otelul Galati.”

We’ll see if this effort by Newcastle comes to fruition, but we do expect Newcastle to bring in a number of top youngsters in the summer.

I'm all for trusting in our scouts and stuff, but I hope this is one for the future. We're a top 4-6 club now. I trust in our scouts, but we shouldn't be relying on miracle signings anymore.

We will need to spend a bit of cash on some proven quality if we want to maintain our position. IMO.

I guess the scouts see him as a reliable young defender who can cover centre half and left back. I want us to sign talented defenders as many as we can 3 or 4 of them.

"Ezekiel 24:17" wasn't that the fictional biblical quote from Pulp Fiction? If we sign him please let his squad number be 24 or 17!

Signinh a left back is a sure sign that Simmo will be on his bike for me like. Santon to right back. I reckon santon will be top notch next season. Getting better everytime I watch him

Pieters will sign, I'm certain. Actually had a dream that it was on the back of the News Of The World (now, of course defunct...)

I've heard bits about this lad but I don't think he's being signed as a starter, good player though. It'll finally mean Ferguson can forget about playing LB and focus on his wing play.

Sounds like someone who could provide some depth and develop. All talk at present of course but he sounds exactly what we need defensively to complement a new centre back and full back.

This is kinda on the mark, we've not established the top 6 we have merely achieved a top six finish, next season is to start to establish ourselves amongst the elite. There's still a lot of work to do.
