Just heard that the FA have officially approached West Brom about Sir Roy's availability. Personally I'd choose him every time over HR
He deserves the chance. What he doesn't deserve is the criticism he will get from millions if things don't go his way immediately like at Liverpool. I don't really mind either way though as I couldn't give two hoots about the English national team.
If he gets it I will definitely start supporting the national team again. Hopefully he'll get a better chance than he had at liverpool
He's got a good resume for it, much better than Harry Redknapp. Good luck to him if he gets the job. He deserves the chance at a real big job.
This is difficult for me. As a proud Welshman, I always take delight in seeing England falter, but with Roy at the helm, there would be something inside me wanting him to succeed. I think he would see the England job as his last anyway, so not being able to get another if it all goes down the ****ter probably won't have crossed his mind. Harry must be fuming.
Also, I hope Roy uses this hopeful appointment to cast away from the international scene the Liverpool flops who refused to perform under him at Anfield. But I suspect he has far too much class for that. I hope Paul Konchesky and AJ are sitting by the phone when the next international squad is announced
I feel roy will be as good a choice as any, and better than most that we have had in the past. As far as the konch and aj are concerned they could be sitting by their phone for a long time.
There are only two of them (Gerrard & Johnson). Hopefully Gerrard is forcibly retired from international football.
Jamie Carragher is supposedly retired from international football. I had forgotten about Joe Cole. It's the easiest way to live life.
And we were getting along so well... Woy has good credentials, he's managed across Europe and knows how to set a team up. Unfortunately I do think he'll ultimately fail and get ripped apart by the media for it, just like all the rest. I don't know why the FA are limiting themselves to English managers only? Seems daft. Look what happened last time they did that...
I think Jamie played that line of 'I will always be available for England if needed' forgetting to mention that England haven't 'needed' him for the past five years...
Sven and Fabio didn't exactly work out for England, although you could make the same judgement for Steve McLaren and just about every other England manager! I believe that a national team's manager should share the same nationality, it just doesn't feel right having a national manager unable to speak in the language of the country he is managing!
The one of Roy's old boys who might still get a look in is - don't laugh - Bobby. If Roy is looking for a striker to play that role, there aren't many better who he could call on, and he won't have a lot of time to ground his ways into his squad. I'm pleased for Roy and worried at the same time. Roy was brilliant for us and I love him to bits, but I think his cautious tendencies - remember all those games where we couldn't break down a team who came to defend, because we weren't set up with width, pace, etc - are where he came unstuck with Liverpool. At a bigger club than ours, there are more games where the onus is on you to attack and break the opposition down, and that's going to be the case with England too. Roy's England would be hard to beat, but wouldn't necessarily deal with the middling international sides in a way that the media approve of. He could very quickly find he has the press on his back, whether or not he has the backing of the players. That said, I really hope he gets the chance and proves me wrong. He's an old-fashioned football man who oozes dignity and class, the only one in English football at the moment who has something of the Bobby Robson about him, and he's a Fulham legend. If nothing else, he deserves to be able to look back on his career and say, 'I managed England'.

The job is a poisoned chalice, you just have to look at the likes of Sven and McLaren to see how their failure in the role has affected them at club level. Both were forced to drop down a league, and then both forced out of their respective roles. Saying that, I don't think Roy would be able to turn it down. He has probably wanted this job for the large part of his professional career and now that he has a very good chance of getting it, I think he will bite the FA's hand off to have a stab at it. On the topic of Zamora, I think his England career died when he moved to QPR to be honest. He was a good target man for us, but if you look at his performances for QPR, he has not done well at all. I read a comment on their board today that said Zamora didn't win a single ball in the air, which for a target man is criminal. If you can't shine in a poor team, how can you expect to in a world class one?
Sven and Capello were infinitely better than Shteve! At least we qualified for major tournaments with them! I agree that national teams should have managers of the same nationality, but while there isn't a rule I don't see why the FA are limiting themselves.
I'm not sure it's a case of the FA limiting themselves, I have heard Mourinho and Ancelotti's name mentioned quite a bit. But would either want to come? Probably not. And the FA will not want to lose face by approaching a foreign manager who will only eventually turn them down. I think they should have stuck with Pearce for the Euro's as nobody is expecting anything significant from England, and then make a permanent appointment after the tournament.
