Both sets of fans can pick the bones out of the pros and cons of playing in Europe. At the end of the day, it's what clubs in our position strive for. Considering we were being relegated 3 year ago and have secured a spot in Europe, which in fact is probably the aim of most mid table clubs, I'm over the moon.
Mackem lads, although your points are valid about the strain competing in Europe puts on your squad, it's not a fore gone conclusion that it will hinder us next season. After all our heavily anticipated second season syndrome that was predicted by yourselves around this time last season is killing us ;)

    Hello mate, hows it going?

I take your points but prelim rounds start in June don't they?
And to get anywhere near the final you're talking an extra 20 games & the prize money is ****.

Would I like Sunderland to be in it? Yes of course I would.

If we were, would it affect our league form next season?
    Absolutely yes IMHO.

    Not too bad mate.

If I'm totally honest, I'm not expecting a long run in Europe, being back amongst it is good enough for me for now. We don't know how it would effect our league form. Our Saturday 3pm KO record is abysmal so going on that playing on a Sunday may suit us. It's all ifs and buts. If our league form starts to suffer then you can bet your bottom dollar that games in Europe will be sacrificed ( depending how far along we are) The prize money interns of where newcaslte are at the minute is imaterial as we are on a sound enough footing without Europe, but what money we will receive will only boost what we would get normally anyway and although not as glamorous as the CL, playin in Europe will help is attract the players we are going in for. On a personal note though. European away games are class, I can't wait.

There isn't a fan in the EPL outside the big boys, that would turn their noses up at the Europa league Jarra and you have well earned your place there. My point is that there were more than one of your lot who were almost saying you were challenging the elite now and now its the lesser glamorous Europa, with all the pitfalls it brings to the squad, I thought I'd mention it.

Doesn't say I'm jealous as hell all the same. Lol

I think now you can see we haven't got the team to challenge the big boys on a consistent basis week in week out as when it matters in crunch games like yesterday we dropped the ball and Chelsea and spurs got the job done today. It's the business end of the season now and although we are up there level with spurs in 4th I can't put my hand on my heart and say I thought we would finish 4th. The opportunity is there but to even finish 5th with our last 3 games will be difficult. The reality is, this season has probably happened 1 or 2 years too early for us as the expectation for some fans will be turned right up for next season where as a top 8 finish for me would be acceptable. It all hinges on what we do in the summer really.

We ARE challening the elite though. I don't understand what's so troublesome about that? We're level on points with Spurs fighting for 4th and a point ahead of Chelsea. So if someone says "Are Newcastle currently challenging the elite" what is the answer? No? Arguing against it makes no sense.

We have to take each game as it comes, and obviously the shock defeat against Wigan was a big setback, but that's football. Goals and targets are adjusted as time goes on to reflect changing conditions.

And there is the voice of the great deluded. You keep on believing that SAF is ****ting his knickers at the prospect of the mighty Noocarsel there tiger.

The men in white coats are on their way round now, although you may be out 'socialising ' with all the other little rent boys down the quayside.
