When Newcastle won promotion out of the Championship Alan Smith was pivotal in their Midfield. I can not see any reason why we would not give him another chance at Elland Road. He was a Leeds legend who threw it away, but if he can do a job for us now then why would we turn it down? Pride comes before a fall, so I for one would be happy to give him a year to prove himself.
Its something that has been debated about for a while now, as much as I loved smudge when he was here, the flip side to it is he is passed his best, I think we need to move on and fill our midfield with youth and experience, however if he signed a pay as you play deal and proved himself a worthy acquisition then fair enough, I just think there would be too much history there for a lot of the fans to get over.
He would rather retire and work as a coach with the Newcastle kids than come back to LUFC. The anti-Smith fans have done their job - turned a committed player and lifelong fan into someone that hates the club. Tis a shame.
An old has been like Smith ahead of young Zac Thompson in the pecking order? No thanks. Thompson's showed promise, has that youthful zip about his play, and is the future for this club. Also fills in at RB when needed. We don't need Smith back.
It's been well documented that he was given no other choice than to go to the scum, as they offered the most. He also waived his entire transfer fee to give it to the club after having offered to stay and play for nothing.
I don't care about how he left. That's the past and we have been living in it for too long. Its time to think about the future & I think Smithy can do a job in a Leeds shirt.
You're contradicting yourself OP, Smith's the past and that's where he should stay. No way is he the future.
No I am not. The past is the past. I am only concerned about the future, and year we need a proven tough tackling holding Midfielder to blend with the youth.
It's been well documented that his agent gave the club no other choice than to accept the offer from scum, because it was his "preferred destination". He could donate the club half his wage every week and that would still never make up for the betrayal of claiming he was Leeds through and through and then accepting a move to them. If you're a proper Leeds fan, you don't take going over the Pennines like it's your standard mercenary career-bettering move. You make a fuss about it and try get a move to Everton, Valencia or one of the other clubs rather than getting your agent to put feelers out there for Ferguson and his band of fugly tossers round Old Trafford to sign you. An honest man never compromises principles for practice. If we shouldn't be living in the past, we shouldn't be signing this aging, worthless plodder. A relic of the worst days of our club's excesses and betrayals. Leave him in the past if anything.
I remember him scoring for the Salford Yanks infront of the Stretford End and kissing the badge......enough said
Even if you do think it's a good idea to climb into bed with traitorous scum bastards, I've already said why signing him wouldn't be "looking forwards".
Just a few points: He never kissed their badge. That is a myth, and like Simon says (no jokes please ) you wont find a video You need an older wiser head in that position to drag the younger 1s through. But we already have Brown. If Brown left Id have no problem with Smith Those other clubs werent offering money up front for him. Scums offer was the only viable option for LUFC Hes already said he wont come back because 'its abit like going back to an ex girl friend...it never works'
