But who have we got that you would call class? Yes, there's lot's of players who do it at club level, but how many reproduce that form/class at International level?
be more specific, exactly what class do you think holt is lacking? What do class do other england strikers have that he is lacking?
also precisely right honestly, the argument against holt going is so feeble that its become laughable now. there is no valid reason why he shouldn't at the very least get called up to the upcoming friendlies. if he isn't, its based purely on club bias and nothing else.
The argument is he's not good enough, simple as. He's been fairly lucky this season and it's a one off, you don't include a 31 year old in an international squad for that.
What, so I don't think that Grant Holt is good enough to go to the Euro's and I'm a "knob". There are a massive load of knobs out there then. You'd think I was saying Wayne Rooney shouldn't go or something. My argument's fairly simple, Holt's not good enough, that's it. Apparently I'm also an idiot for using a comparison to Kevin Davies, a player who was picked on form but was far more established in the PL than Holt. Holt's not amongst the group of the best English strikers so he shouldn't be in the squad. By all means, test him out in a friendly, but you don't take a striker with no international experience and very little experience at the top level to an international tournament when you have players who are established goal scorers for England and have played in the Champions League.
I know it's the "Chicken and egg" question, but if you are not experienced enough to get picked, how the **** do you ever GAIN enough experience to get picked?
There's only two established goalscorers, Rooney and Crouch. They don't need Champions League experience either. Downing, Young, Barry, Milner, Hart, Lescott and others were picked before they ever played in the Champions League.
By showing quality at a young age and being picked for friendlies and qualifiers before you're considered ready and by playing consistently at the top level of football.. By the time Holt got enough experience he'd be past his peak. You also have Bent who's an established, consistent PL goal scorer as well as Wellbeck and Sturridge who are both talented young players with Champions League experience. All those players you mentioned also got going for England playing in friendlies and qualifiers at a young age to build up their international experience, Holt would be thrown into a major international tournament with no international experience and only one season in the Premier League to his name. If this were last year and there were still a few games to be played before the Euro's I'd be unopposed to giving him a shot, but I wouldn't want him put straight in the squad now.
So, you've gone from saying Holt is not good enough to play for England to saying England should, by all means, give him a chance in friendlies. Well maybe he will be given that chance in the two friendlies before we go to Poland/Ukraine. Would love to know what goalkeepers you think we should pick.
No, I'm saying he's not good enough to go straight into the Euro's squad and I don't think he has enough time time to get enough experience to do so. If this was a year earlier by all means I would be for him being given a shot but there's not enough time. If he was a youngster ripping up the league I might consider it as it would at least benefit England in the future but by the time of the next tournament Holt will be past his peak anyway. As for the 'keepers I think Hart is the obvious pick, then 2 from any of the other decent English 'keepers because they're all not quite up to standard and probably won't play anyway.
So if Holt gets picked for the two friendlies and scores in each game, and even after scoring more goals than any other Englishman in the country, apart from Rooney, you still wouldn't give him a spot in the squad?
I don't see him being given a chance in the friendlies, if I'm honest. His face doesn't fit, but of course, Frazier Campbell's, who has been so good this season*, does fit. *That might of been sarcastic.
