Norwich back to back promotions league one Championship, this season Southampton, next season Charlton? Our first season in the Championship was a struggle, which doesn't seem to be the case now. Newly promoted teams seem to do pretty well. Has the quality in the Championship got worse, has the quality in league one improved? League one does seem to be a resting place for clubs with financial and stewardship issues, clubs use the division to re group and come back much stronger for it.
I think a lot of it has to do with the teams that do get promoted. Norwich, Southampton, Charlton and both the Sheffield clubs if they come up are traditionally big clubs with good fan bases who seem to have momentum when they come up. All have fallen on hard times but have regrouped, come back up and carried on going. Some of the smaller sides, i.e Peterborough and Scunthorpe haven't taken the league by storm and have done what is expected of promoted when they come up. When we left League 1 there was only really the Wendies that were a traditional big club, in recent years Leeds, Forest and the aforementioned 5 clubs have all resided in the division and these clubs eventually manage to regroup and get back into the Championship.
No. I don't see Charlton & Sheff Utd going all the way to the PL. Norwich & Saints are well set up, big stadiums, good managers and financial backing.. and MK Dons and Stevenage would struggle in our league. Hudders or Wendies for the play-offs..
Totally agree - its the stature of the Clubs that have been promoted - Norwrch Southampton etc - they invested heavily in Lg 1 and their momentum kept them going into the NPC. Definite difference in the standard of football between the two divisions..
Charlton are pretty big, their recent history has been top flight mostly, they have taken L1 by storm, I wouldn't rule them out of automatic.
