As much as I think Dorus played a major part in our promotion and doesn't deserve a boo tomorrow there is no doubt he made the wrong decision in going to Wolves, citing as he did that the major reason was that they were "more likely to stay up". I've got no problem with any of that really - who hasn't made some major blunders throughout their lives, whether it be professionally or personally? Hindsight is wonderful, right? But sorry Dorus, to say it was the "right choice" is just pants. I understand why you're saying it, but pants it definitely is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17864121
He made a mistake all right, and he can say what he wants, but Wolves are not going to pay that much more than Swansea, but then he's been looking for a move with better money for some seasons, and that was obvious by the way he dragged his feet to sign a contract in seasons past, I hope we hammer Wolves tomorrow, and the boys put a hat full past the donkey!..................
He probably received a signing on fee from Wolves',since it was free transfer. That, plus an increase in wages, would have been very seductive to most people,I suspect. Changing jobs for better conditions is a persons right,I did it several times, minus the lump sum,so I cannot understand the constant animosity towards footballers who are merely looking after themselves, and their families. DeVries was part of the Club for,was it four years, and contributed greatly to the success of recent years. Cut him some slack. Hopefully,he will be on the losing side tomorrow, but after that, good luck to him. He is not a bad person overnight because he changed Clubs.
Vetch, don't think that's what has folks backs up. It was the comments he made about Wolves probably staying up while we wouldn't. Go by all means but don't make comments like that.
Ff,if he did say something along those lines, maybe his words were taken out of context. How often is that done by journalists, who are looking for sensationalism? Even if he was correctly quoted,I'm sure he meant no real harm to the Club. Why would he want to do that? Such things can come back and haunt him.
Lets get a perspective here Vetch! Professional footballers situations can't be compared with us mere mortals job wise, and while Dorus can do what he wants, and say what he wants, so can we, and we will, and I hope we put a shed full past the donkey tommorow!........
"Professional footballers are ... mere mortals",Dragon, and are as fallible as the rest of us. Have you never said anything that could be misconstrued,or taken out of context? I know I have. Very embarrassing when exposed, but we survive. I think the real problem lies with the disloyalty of the supporter, who quite often suffer from poor memory, and are quick to condemn a player when he leaves for pastures new, even after many years of sterling performances. Hero today, villain tomorrow, would be a suitable epitaph for many players.
No offence but the point is being missed by some. He was a good servant to us and there's no animosity from me but to say "it was the right choice" and that he has no regrets is utter tripe. Like I said we all make mistakes in life but most of us will admit that we made an error and acknowledge it - I can pinpoint mine over the years. I'd have thought something like this: "Wolves are a great club with an established top flight history so nobody can blame me for going there. Of course I wish things had turned out differently and perhaps with the benefit of hindsight I should have stayed with the Swans" That way he's being respectful to Wolves whilst being frank about his departure and acknowledging his wrong choice. But to say "I made the right choice" doesn't cut it for me and I think most people will see the comment the same way - disingenuous - because it was patently the wrong choice. No regrets? Er....come off it.
If DeVries secured financial security for himself and his family, what's to "regret". Why should anyone expect him to say something he doesn't believe? The bottom line is that football is only a game, and there are more important things in life - really.
How can he publicly come out and say he made the wrong choice and regrets leaving ? Surely Wolves would tell him to get lost and find another team !! I think personally he probably does have a few regrets about it but the pay packet certainly helps ease his 'pain'. I'd be surprised if we see any of our first team players move to a team this season perceived as a sideways move. Unless it's a top six side interested why would any of the players want to leave ?
No animosity from me either, but can we put at least 3 or 4 past the donkey tomorrow please!..............
As far as im concerned he cant really say anything different . His loyalty is to Wolves now not us, imagine how alot of our fans would take it if one of our players said he regreted his move to us !! Im sure he does regret his move but it probably was the best thing to happen to us, Vorm is a better keeper and it all worked out for the best, especially for us!! Of course boo him during the game, but before and after i hope he gets the respect he deserves ,he is probably happy enough on 17k a week at wolves and will be earning that for the next 2 yrs so good luck to him,he has no reason to be sad and it probably works out very well as his standard is probably championship and hennesey will be looking for a move away . Did he tell a lie? probably, but his loyalty is to Wolves fans not us thats the least they expect for their 17k a week so dorus couldnt really say anything different.
Dorus did a good job for us when he was here. He decided to move on and we secured, in my opinion, a better keeper. Who knows where we'd be in the table if Dorus had been our first choice goalie? Vorm has made some crucial saves that have helped shape our season. At least Dorus could now end up on A Question of Sport - if only as a question "Name the player whose last game in the Championship saw him promoted to the Premier League, and whose first game in the Premier League saw him relegated to the Championship?"
Now that's good. I take your points about him not being able to say anything else - that's probably valid. Still doesn't make it true though. And no, FFS, it's nothing to do with Veet, though now you've mentioned it that sounds interesting.
