Cisse - Black Cats wanted me

DVD from Pardew sold Newcastle's style of play to Senegal striker

Papiss Cisse: Believes Newcastle's style of play suits him

Papiss Cisse has revealed he could have been a Sunderland player before becoming Newcastle's new No.9 hero.

The Senegal international striker arrived on Tyneside in a £10million move from Bundesliga strugglers Freiburg in January.

The 26-year-old had attracted interest from a number of clubs after scoring nine goals in 17 games, despite the German club being rooted to the bottom of the league at Christmas, and his move to Newcastle came about very quickly.

"It's the Newcastle style more than the Premier League that suits me."
Papiss Cisse Quotes of the week

"Initially I was meant to be going to Bayern Munich," Cisse said in the Daily Mirror. "In the end it didn't happen.

"In England, Sunderland and Fulham wanted me. Then at the last minute my agent told me, when I was in Senegal, 'I've booked a flight to Paris, then Newcastle. If all goes well, you'll sign there'.

"The next day, I was there. By 5pm, I'd finished the medical, and by 8pm, I'd signed."

    Style

The switch has been a huge success with Cisse scoring a remarkable 11 goals in his first 10 Premier League games for the club since completing his African Cup of Nations duties with Senegal.

And Cisse knew all about the side's capabilities before even making his debut - thanks to a DVD given to him by Newcastle manager Alan Pardew showcasing the team's style of play.

Cisse added: "As I was going to the Africa Cup of Nations, Pardew had prepared a DVD for me, which I watched every evening in my hotel room.

"It's the Newcastle style more than the Premier League that suits me. There are lots of French players here."

Pardew himself is baffled as to why there were any question marks about the player's pedigree before arriving in the Premier League.

The Magpies boss said on Thursday: "I am still mystified that people underestimated his CV before he came to us. He has been in the Bundesliga, scoring plenty of goals. He is a finisher.

"What he is getting at our club is more chances, more than he got at his former club. And we are on a great run. Put chances in front of him and he will score."

Sounds like his agent made the decision. Some footballers are so dim they need others choose what socks to wear.

Read the thread properly, it may become clearer. His agent booked the flight, or did you let that one slip past you?.... by the way your rhyme is ****e, and innacurate, facts first sunshine.Facts first.

Do you think the choice was his, or his agents. And on that point , now he is known in UK, do you think you can hang on to him ?

ha. apparently. so we what, lost him at the gate?? some mag caught him by the elbow and walked him via a back entrance to a waiting unmarked car??

the more likely version is that we, like we did with adam johnson, dragged our heels and tried to drive the price down on a player who was easily worth it. the mags did their homework and came in with an appropriate offer (looks a bargain now like) and made the guy certain he was wanted, so he signed for them and hasn't looked back. meanwhile, we are still relying on nicklas bendtner for a steady goal every five games or so.

If Bayern by-passed him by then says much. It could very well become the Frank McAvennie syndrome?

I don't think MON was interested. I can imagine we wanted him during the summer with Bruce - however I don't think MON was prepared to spend big in January until assessing the team..

So IMO I think this is bulls**t.

Also I don't think we f**cked up big time - the reason being is because he scored s**tl loads in Germany - never played for a big team so it was always a risk. It paid off for them so well done.

I'm hoping in the summer though MON will bring in a 15+ goalscorer, and my the sounds of his recent interview he wants atleast two 10+ goal scorers and one 15+ goalscorer.

Never even heard of him when we were first linked at the start of the season but, having seen him up the road it looks like we missed the bus on him. As said probably SAFC dragging their heels over price again.

To be honest all the clubs get the same players hawked around by agents. Sunderland were linked plenty. Fortunately we had the nuts and foresight to get this one pushed through.

Agents can advise but the puck would stop with Cisse, and we are offering footballers European football, possibly Champions League and are also offering a great set up amongst some world class players... Newcastle United is a very attractive club for real young talent.
