Sad news, but then if certain individuals are blaming the driver for being too old then the DVLA are the one's who should be responsible. I have a colleague who when reaching 70 had to re-apply for his licence, no medical was needed only a questoinaire to be answered, they then checked the questionaire and obviously in his case were satisfied..... which to me seems daft!
I see a lot of posters on here seem to have it in for elderly drivers...However, any statistical evidence you have a mind to source will show that male drivers under 20 years of age are far more likely to be involved in an accident than drivers over 70.
Whats sad is a lorry driver gets the blame then its implied its the car driver because he is 75, no evidence and nobody knows so maybe it would be better not to imply blame.
The same could be said about 2/3rds of the drivers in the UK today though. Like I said, its not an age thing its a **** driver thing.
More accidents are caused by younger drivers, than folks over 65. Dont get your point. Im 64, have several cars, drive regularly to,,,, MUNICH, DRESDEN, VENICE, ROMANIA,,,,As part of my working life, how far do you drive, and what the **** do you know about me, or the likes of me, Im an Aircraft engineer, self employed. without my car I dont work. And I recon I am a better all round driver than most folks, due to the fact I have had to learn at least thirty different driving laws within EUROPE. Then we do South Africa, Oman, Saudi,Abu dahbi, Australia, Thailand, Borneo,,,,,,,,and so on, all these places and more I have driven and worked,,,and MORE. so dont judge, cos you aint got the right.
Whilst this is true, there is also a much higher proportion of 'young' drivers on the road, and they also spend considerably more time in the car. I'm no longer a young driver, sadly, but these are facts. Cest's right, a **** driver can be any age!
But an older driver knows how to get out of a situation, experiance counts. Also preserving the life and running costs of his car.via servicing. how many youngans get their cars srviced? and how safe are the cars they drive. One of my Jags xj executve diesel, gives 45.5 miles to the gallon, at a steady 80 mph. Down to servicing, and good driving, this is about a nearly two ton car. Ask the souped up corsa driver [big exhaust] what his mpg is. You could also ask what would happen if his car hit a car like mine, and what would be the outcome, young does not mean safe. FFS I was young and stupid also, now got more sense. Agree not as adventurious but happy at the rate I need to go, must admit,,,,,,,,,,,Germany,,,,,,,,,,,I still wring my cars out.
Like I said Bill, not suggesting all old drivers are ****, but it's also unfair to tarr all young drivers too. Experience counts for nothing if reaction isn't quick enough mate.
As someone who is shortly to accept his old age pension, i whole heartedly agree with your comment Cest. Age has nothing what soever to do with ones ability to drive and if anyone on this board thinks otherwise then they should go and f**k themselves, i would back my driving skill against anyone.
Age limits on certain things in life...your working life for ex.. Would you lot like to go on your saga holiday on a coach trip to France with a 75-80 year old coach driver? Different countries, different things happen.. Falcon, you know that if this had happened here, the driver would have just ran off. Maybe the law should be changed, but to what i have no idea.... As no doubt in a few decades to come, i won't agree with the laws also... .................................................... For the op, it's a tragic case, but until the enquiry is complete, we should not really cast a judgement.
For those playing the blame game how about the Butler. As Com says lets wait and see what comes of the official investigation before casting aspersions. Back on the op
Speed is the word, most young drivers, not all but most, think speed impresses, I did and just about everyone I know did and speed kills. I still speed at times and I know thats wrong but I do it now less and less, never in built up areas and never to impress. The older you get the less need you have to impress anyone and maybe the more sensible you get, its not age that should stop you driving its health and the older you get the more chance of deterioration in health, that's what should stop you, not a number.
