Hi there, I'm new to not606 and I thought I would start off a light-hearted thread. I got thinking the other day as to what the best game I have ever seen saints play has been. It didn't take me too long as I looked back to the incredible 4-3 win against norwich in 04/05. The game had everything. It took us out of the relegation zone but alas it was not to be. Just wondered if you guys had any fond memories to share also?
Staying up against Sheffield United was pretty epic. There have been better games against better opposition maybe, but for ones I've actually been at, this and the JPT Final take the cake.
My favourite day out was the FA semi-final at Aston Villa. Arrived to find the area packed out with Saints fans...I swear one pub had Saints fans stacked up the wall. We cheered the teams arrival and surrounded the opposition bus, good-naturedly jeering them. They kept looking around trying to catch sight of their fans, but they were no where. Enjoyed the game and the wonderful journey home, knowing we were in the final and in Europe the following season. My other favourite moment was Le Tissier's winning goal in the last game at The Dell. Never known such joy. Loved JPT final, especially as I felt it was a reward for ML. How poignant we didn't know, of course. There will be lots more matches and great times to come.
Some games just stick in the memory and for me it has to be a one all draw with Dave Sexton's QPR in the 70s. Their side was so full of talent with a great player in every position. Terry Paine had one of his best games for us and Channon scored a suprb goal. Channon ran in from the left on goal and Paine chipped the ball over Channon's shoulder and into his path. He hit it on the volley at an unstoppable pace past Phil Parkes to equalise. As great a goal as the the best of Matt Le Tiss's.
for sheer enjoyment the away leg vs Steua Bucherest. i went with my teenage son and his mate. early flight from Bournemouth to be greeted by armedpolice at the airport. Coach trip around bucherest to kill time before eventually being dropped off in the centre of town. found a great bar in the park where they were selling stella for 50p a litre. great craic with the local bar keeper. and young lads who wanted to swap our clothes for theirs!! went and found somewhere for lunch - more cheap beer. watching the old men play chess on the pavement. back to the bar in the park, to be greeted like long lost freinds, more beer, and then they gave us the local spirits which took the enamel off your teeth. getting back on the coach dying for a pee, only to find theyd locked the toilet!!!!! very long journey to the ground which was like a building site relocated to a bomb site. searched going in only to find the concrete terraces falling apart. armed police evrywhere in the ground, but disappeared when it started pouring with rain. Got absolutely soaked! great craic with the home fans - we didnt stop chanting all game, and dispite the 1 - 0 loss a great atmosphere. being applauded by the home fans and team at the end was a nice touch. LOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG flight home. and goin g to work the next day after 2 hours sleep didn't help, but a memory for life!!!
Morning all, here is my favorite match involving the mighty Saints! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wweh3ROiqWI The video is a bit grainy but what a cracker!
Singing Blue 3 you are oh so predictable. My recollection of that era was that you were never on the TV as you were then as now not very good!
St.Godders I was actually tempted to put up one of our recent 4-1 victories, but decided against it as it is much friendlier to show some nostalgic and vintage footage between two sides playing in the same division, rather than one side outclassing the other!
3-2 at home to Arsenal in 2002 although the FA cup semi final and staying up against Sheffield United was great aswell
Last game Vs Sheff Utd Wembley JPT Final Oh and this was a cracker...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWjOtWsB2_w
You played well in the cup this season, against Blackpool, That was a great win, Wish you had beaten Man Utd when you played them.
There are soooooo many. However, after a youtube search to get back my memories, my favourite game is Saints v Watford FA Cup Semi 2003. My favourite goal celebration (that I did) is when MLT scored the last ever goal at the Dell. I also remember an 8-2 win against Coventry in 1982 at the Dell. I could go on all night!
Just remembered the JPT final, The JPT Area Final (second leg) at St Mary's when the place ROCKED! WOW,WOW what an atmosphere. The 4-3 over Norwich in the prem (2005), all the St Mary's v Pompey. Man u 6-3, 4-1 and 1-0 when Beattie scored in the last minute. Newcastle 2-1 (those MLT goals), v Everton to stay up at the Dell (Parhars 2 goals), v Sheff Utd 3-2. OMG I moan about the Saints, but HOW MANY AMAZING MOMENTS have they given me! The greatest game is yet to come. Saints v Walsall 2011 - the promotion game!!!
AND....Coventry 5-5 (late 80s), Norwich 4-4 (late 80s away), Spurs 4-4 boxing day away 1983? (2-0 down after 20 mins then 2-2 half time, then 4-2 down after 70 mins and 4-4 final score with Steve Moran scoring the equaliser in front of the travelling Saints) Tranmere 3-4 (for the wrong reasons!), Spurs 4-0 (FA Cup 2003), Liverpool 1-0 (1981?), Man Utd 3-2 (1982 I think) - David Armstrong last minute winner in front of me at the Milton Rd End, he jumped into the crowd and (aged 13) I kissed his arm!!!!!!!
