I think appointing Scotty as the kit man is an inspired appointment by Del.

A good kit man does so much for to make sure the right people are in the right place with the right kit and the right attitude. He is the fixer, the friend, the shoulder to cry on, the motivator and the link between the players and management.

You want someone to do that who has Bristol City running through his veins, who has a footballing brain and can make everyone in the dressing room laugh and enjoy being at training and match days.

Step forward Mr Murray you are the perfect man for this job.

Not sure I agree with this tbh. Scotty was....IS....such a hero and legend at the gate, it is,in a way, sad to see him fetching and carrying for others. Surely he is above something like that?
Unless I am completely wrong in my idea of what a kitman does of course, in which case please put me right.

I must admit I agree with Caldicot,it's great to have Scotty back but surely a more dignified position would be better, mind you who could be better than old BUSTER,heartbeat of the club in his day..

To be honest I think it's a great appointment. The kind of guy that'll be great for the spirit in the dressing room!

Completely disagree with the calls for a coaching role or whatever, I seem to remember he helps coach a couple of the youth teams for us atm. If he provies good at that then by all means give him a coaching role in the future, however just because he is a club legend doesn't mean he should be given a first team coaching job just because of jobs for the boys.

It is rare on this site that I have the opportunity to add some words of wisdom based on personal experience but here goes.

Not wishing to name drop but several years ago I had a guest for the evening who was none other than the kit-man for Man Utd and spent a very enjoyable time finding out exactly what were his responsibilities. Obviously we discussed many footballing subjects but the key topic was his duties as kit-man and I came out the other end extremely surprised as to his role with the team.

Obviously his first and primary role is to take care of the kit and to ensure adequate supplies of various other kit related products related to individual player's needs and requirements. He is present at all club/player meetings and is with the team at nearly all times which includes all training sessions. The list of responsibilities does not make this a menial task in any way shape or form and the week's duties do not end when the team leaves the bench after a match but will continue in the dressing room and during the return ride home from away matches. To show his importance he sits on the bench close to the manager during matches.

The most surprising aspect of the job was the fact that my visitor was widely used as a counsellor for the newly arrived players providing help in arranging their personal lives with respect to their move to a new club. He befriended many well known legends during this spell and helped so many others adapt to the transition, which in a lot of cases meant new arrivals from foreign lands re-adjusting their lives in a major way to their new surroundings.

So all the doubters who are concerned that this is just a "let's see if we can find a job for him" situation put your thoughts back in the cupboard because I learnt first hand that this is a very important role in most clubs (Scottish driven possibly?) and I think Derek has made a very wise choice to bring back a much loved player from our history to fill such a key role.

Nice one Derek, and Scotty will bring something special to our team from every aspect - dressing room, training ground and on the bench. Best signing for a while and all City fans should welcome him back with open arms and you only have to listen to his enthusiasm during Radio Bristol broadcasts to know how much he loves our club.

Invermeremike that is exactly my understanding of the role. Someone who understands the heart of the club, supports new players to settle, encourages those on the sidelines and generally improves the morale of the club.

His experiences as a pro and understanding of the club make him good for this. But his desire and ambition to learn from the bottom and work his way up is what makes me think this will be a brilliant choice.

He is definitely the kind of inspirational person we need aboard to take us to the next level despite the gastrointerventions from a strange land.
