Well done Demps, the 4th best player in the premiership! That should put a few bob on his price tag. http://www.fulhamfc.com/Club/News/NewsArticles/2012/April/DempseysAccolade.aspx
C58, I'm dumbfounded that he's 4th behind Paul Scholes! WTF is that all about? Scholes has only played since January. Jeez, is this another example of a little club being overlooked despite the stats of Demps having one of the finest seasons ever. COYW
The Scholes one baffles me too, but Clint has done very very well to get in ahead of the likes of Silva, Kompany, Aguero and Parker. Definitely deserved third place at least though.
Well done to 'The Ghost' Clint has done so well with us why would he want to leave His price tag should go up, but also if we keep him, we'll have to pay him more. My choice would have been 1. Kompany 2. Van Persie 3. Clint 'The Ghost' Dempsey Not sure why they got Scholes on the list, unless of course they are Man U fans. I don't see him as responsible for an up surge in Uniteds Form, whereas City Losing Kompany for ridicules suspensions cost them dear.
A good half season is all you need for these accolades, just look at Silva and Parker, who were both nominated for Player of the Year, both of whom have been a shadow of their former selves since the new year. I do think Scholes deserves some recognition though, he has been the driving force behind Utd's title charge, which for a player in his late 30's is no mean feat.
The one that Silva and Parker were nominated for is the Player's Player of the year which is voted for about half way through the season so at that point it made sense for them to be nominated. I don't understand it though, it's called Player or the Year so why can they base it on half a season? It doesn't make sense to me.
I think the scheduling is a hang-over from pre-digital days when the sending out and returning of voting forms was a time-consuming administrative task. I think there was probably once a valid reason for voting so early, but there's no reason not to change it now. Even if they still wanted their awards do to take place mid-April, they could easily open electronic voting in late March with a deadline a week or so before the ceremony, surely.
Despite the weirdness of Scholes being anywhere on the list, it's an amazing achievement for Fulham and Dempsey. I'm sure that if you put a gun to his head, he'd admit he's getting huge support from his teammates. What doesn't go into the statistics are things like: a) all the dummy runs Riise makes to draw defenders out of the middle b) fantastic passing from Murphy and others c) all the thankless hold-up work from BZ before moving on to bluer pastures d) all those assists from Duff. He may have gotten some recognition, but he owes his friends a party. - regarding Paul Scholes, About 40 years ago someone made a god-aweful film called "True Grit" that starred John Wayne (the Coen brothers recent remake is infinitely better). Film buffs (Bandy, help me out here) will tell you that True Grit (1969) was far from The Duke's best work, yet he won the Oscar for it, beating out great performances by Peter O'Toole in Goodbye Mr Chips and Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy. I don't care that Paul Scholes finished ahead of Dempsey because Scholes has been a fantastic player for as long as I can remember and, based on the weight of his contribution to football, I can live with this tip of the cap to a former great player.
That logic is why Giggs was player of the year a few years back. He certainly wasn't the player of the season that year - he essentially won it for his body of work over the last 15 years. With Scholes I think he got votes because people saw the difference in United without him and it fed the legend.
Totally agreed DR. Wayne's Oscar was a pity Oscar. It was likely to be his last big role in a big film before he retired, so the Academy gave him this Oscar as he was very unlikely to get another shot at it. Very much like Giggs winning his award a few years back. I still think the John Wayne True Grit is a good film, very much over-hyped because of Wayne's Oscar but good nonetheless (Cohen's as DR stated is better) Jon Voight was also great in Midnight Cowboy.
I don't know - Spurs only spent £5.5m on Parker after he came first in the same award. Personally I think Dempsey is worth atleast £13m, at most £17m but I've got a horrible feeling we won't see an offer above £8m.
He doesn't score goals though Silk, this is where Clint has an advantage. he won't move anyway. He told me so. BTW, welcome back to the board after your little sojourn on the Liverpool board. Some good healthy debate regarding Saint Woy going on there ol' son! Good work.
The talkSPORT lot also voted for Demps ahead of Parker in their 'Team of the Year' selection - http://www.talksport.co.uk/magazine/features/120424/song-edges-parker-krul-better-hart-talksport-listeners-team-year-170555 Jeez, he's in some pretty exaulted company there.
That's true- if he does go I hope it's a good move. He would suit Spain, RM and Barca wouldn't be interested but Malaga have a bit of money at the minute. That way he is not still in the league- Arsenal are probably the only club I'd like to see him at, the others would either bench him or aren't a huge step up from Fulham in terms of current form.
I wouldn't argue with those figures if he wasn't going into the last year of his contract, but the fact that he can move for nothing in a year is the thing that drags his price down.
It's Odd. On paper and on the field (this year) he's better than Nani, Bale, Van Dar Vaart, Lampard, Gerrard and about 10 other big names, yet I'm sure teams would spend twice the money on any of the aforementioned players. I don't want him to go anywhere - I just find the pricing interesting. If I were perfectly honest, there are about a dozen midfielders for which I'd swap Dempsey in a second, but I'm still glad his achievements were recognized by the league.
On a side note, I see Tony Gale has been on TalkSport comparing West Ham's Mark Noble to a young Danny Murphy. Always thought he was a cracking player and if Spam were to fail in their bid for promotion, could be a valid target should Murphy retire at the end of next season?
