Also, we dont have a public holiday for St Georges Day, but in South Africa they have a public holiday for Womens Day (which, this year happens to be August 9th ) - seems a bit sexist ! - especially as there isnt a Mans Day.

The mayor of a small Greek town went to see his counterpart in a small Spanish town.
'How did you get all those Mercedes Town Hall Cars sitting outside the council offices' said the Greek Mayor
'Well, see that Bridge out there?'
    'Yes' says the Greek
'Well, it was designed and budgeted for Europe as a 2 way bridge, but we built it for only one lane and put in Traffic lights at each end'
'Cool' said the Greek mayor - ( or more likely 'Xmacl' in Greek)

So, 12 months later on the reciprocal visit of the Spanish mayor to his Greek friend the Spaniard turns around to his Greek counterpart and asks...' How did you get all those Ferraris as your Mayoral cars parked outside?'
'well' said the Greek, 'do you see that bridge out there?'
    'No' says the Spaniard.

Great Britain means zilch. It is a made up name in which the monarchy groups together all of its subjects.

Do the Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish really care about Great Britain? I do not think so.

The Sun newspaper would have you believe that the majority of English feel prouder of the Union Jack than the St George Flag. I wonder who they polled for that result?

Personally, I care more for the Wyvern of Wessex.

Great Britain is the geographic name for the island on which Wales, Scotland, Mercia, Wessex and the Kingdom of Kent are situated.

It doesn't include Northern Ireland which is indeed on a separate island.
The political name for the union is the United Kingdom which is probably looked upon more sceptically these days than ever before. Surprisingly the United Kingdom does not include the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.
I doubt whether the Sun, being owned by a person who doesn't have any allegiance to the land of his birth (changing nationality for fiducary gain), would understand.

My birth certificate says I was born in Kent, something of which I am justly proud even though in 1966 a bureacrat changed it to become part of Greater London. The flag of Horsa, being red and white has a degree of significance for me.

Salford has it's problems - much like any other post industrial city.

There's good and bad - unfortunately the bad is what leads the news agenda.

You are quite right about Ulster and Great Britain, SVC. My mistake.

The Acts of Union 1707 qualify my point regarding the monarchy lumping everyone together.

Many would argue that it was the Parliaments that agreed the union, but many more of us know the true extent of royal gain.

<laugh> Great joke, Stu - although I think it probably has more than a grain of truth in there as well...

I am leaving England's Green and Pleasant Land for a few days to consort with our Gallic chums and make sure Chez Tewkes is ready for the coming holiday season, so I'll be offline - if I'm not back by 5 o'clock on Saturday...Come On You Reds!

Mozza and the Spitfire just missed out on my top ten, typical.

I have seen Morrissey more times than I can remember and I adore the man: but musical icons missed out on my list - otherwise I would have placed Elgar, Led Zep, Rod Stewart, Mick Fleetwood and George Formby in there.

Ten Things I Hate About England (present day) -

1- The lack of St George's Day celebrations.
2- The lack of English history taught in schools. Too many over-the-top Black History projects.
3- Lack of university and prescription fees for the Welsh and Scottish.
4- People spitting in the street. This should be a criminal offence.
5- Dangerous dogs unmuzzled. This should be a criminal offence.
6- The BBC's anti-anything-white-and-English agenda. And Doctor Who.
    7- The Simon Cowell Epidemic
8- Useless Immigration: Romanian Big Issue sellers, Eastern European Bootleggers, 97% Somalian unemployment, Polish Poundland employees etc, etc...
9- The influence that Gangsta Rap and Grime 'music' has had on the youth of today.
10- A lack of support for charities such as The British Legion, Autism UK, OCD-UK, St Dunstan's and any other charity that supports the elderly, war heroes, the disabled, the homeless, animal welfare etc, etc, etc...

I do like these off-topic chats (especially when we have no football concerns to discuss)...

Surely Ponders isntead of 'Lack of university and prescription fees for the Welsh and Scottish' you mean University Fees in England?

And 'Useless Immigration' is suitably diplomatic, very nice turn of phrase!

Ha! You are almost right, Kish. I believe something should be put back into the kitty for tuition - but only from those that can afford it. This should be rolled out across all of the UK. But in an ideal world - and we could afford if the country were run better - there would be free education for all. At the moment, though, this is not realistic.

I suppose I could have twinned 'Useless Immigration' with 'Indigenous Dross'? This would achieve an even greater level of diplomacy.

Indigenous Dross: folk from South and West Essex; cretins who spit on the street; cretins who put their rubbish out on the wrong days; cretins who use mobile phones while driving; cretins who leave dogs in hot cars with no ventilation and water; cretins who litter beaches, the countryside and any other public space; Nick Clegg; cretins who deface ancient monuments (see problems at Flint Castle).

The above list is by no means exhaustive. There is too much dross to list.

I dislike the 'Red Cross' and Amnesty International, both groups are FAR to political for my liking.

    An example
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17824132
If you go to the middle east you have to respect their muslim laws yet no mention of this in the report for some reason?
