So, with Wilshere having missed all of this season and he will be missing the Euros, Stuart Pearce has declared he will look at Wilshere to see if he can play anyways.

Knowing our luck, if he does go, he will get injured for the whole of next season. Lets just hope Jack stays injured up until the selection date, otherwise he will be playing in a pointless tournament at great risk.

I swear Pearce is a complete idiot. The guy is missing out an entire season of football, followed by the Euro's and he wants to pick him? Is he that desperate to play Wilshere when he knows nothing of his fitness and form? This isn't some little kick about, it's a big tournament. Crazy guy!

Since when?

He'd be lucky to have Wilshere in the Olympics team in whatever form/fitness. And what do we care really, if this actually helps him get ready for the next season all the better.

it won't though. its a pointless tournament with about 6 games in 2 weeks, very tiring and he will miss all of our pre-season preparations as will need a break afterwards. that means he'd also miss the start of next season.

I'd hate to see Wilshere play in the Olympics. The guy hasn't played for a year and he'll just be risking hampering his recovery by playing in a ****ty tournament that's not worth the risk at all. I don't reckon he'll be fit enough in time though, and will probably end up missing most of next season anyway...

Wenger should do a fergie and fake injury. I know it's not easy but he gets away with it all the time. In any case he'll be sooo rusty. He needs a full preseason not a competitive tournament.

Slight set back for Wilshere on the cards - oh dear - unlucky Pearce <ok>

It's a meaningless tournament really. Football is a minor competition in The Olympics. But I'm not opposed to seeing Wilshere play in some of the games, it could be useful for him.

The tournament starts at the same time as Arsenal's pre season tour. I would rather have Jack with us preparing for the season.

Anyone who says that the Olympics is a "****ty tournament" is talking out their backside. It's the Olympics. Winning an Olympic gold medal is the pinnacle of achievement in sport.

Not really, like Piskie said it's a minor sport in the Olympics and I'm sure anyone would much rather win the Euros or the World Cup than the Olympic football event. But maybe I'm just being biased because I'm not really a fan of the Olympics.

An Olympic gold medal means more in terms of recognition to the general public the world over than any footballing trophy. You say to anybody that you've won a gold medal at the Olympics, and that earns respect. You can't say the same for "I won the Champions League" or the "I won the World Cup". The level of respect is simply not the same.

Everybody at the Olympics will want to win that gold medal.

No.

<ok>

That should always be the case for a footballer. Also, sports like football and tennis should not even been played at the Olympics. What other sport, has an age limit in the Olympics? It's not what footballers grow up dreaming about winning.

I was always under the impression that the olympics was for "amateur" sports, not football stars. An athlete would put winning an olympic gold at the top of their to-do list, a footballer will never view it with the same enthusiasm as winning the world cup.

Sorry ... you've got the rose-tinted football fan glasses on there. To the general public of the world, an Olympic medal trumps all of those. No argument. Worldwide it is the biggest sporting event on the planet.

You have to look at the different sports and then analyse what the medal means. Messi won goal back in 2008, but how many people mention that? They do mention the fact he has won the CL twice and scored in both finals. Even in tennis, Nadal also won gold, but it's the grand slams that people mention first. Basically, it depends on the sport. For an athletic, then yes it's all about the Olympics. The general public do not remember and see Messi and Nadal, as Olympic gold medalist first.

No mate ... people who don't care about football aren't talking about anyone winning the Champions League twice and scoring in both finals. Again, rose-tinted football fan glasses.

An Olympic medal is a universal sign of brilliance, and everyone in the world grows up wanting one, whatever sport they play. In the world of football and tennis, other competitions are given more importance ... but to the world at large, nothing quite compares to an Olympic gold medal. There's a certain special awe-inspiring quality to that medal which is universal in every country in the entire world. And as much as people who are never going to win one can sit on a forum and say "yeah, it's a ****ty tournament" ... you can bet your arse that everyone playing in the Olympics will want that medal badly.
