AFRAID THERE'LL BE NO BIG SPENDING, MARTIN O'NEILL

By Ricco: On the inside of football

MARTIN O’NEILL could be heading for a frustrating summer after being told by Sunderland owner Ellis Short that there will be no extensive transfer budget for the Black Cats boss.

O’Neill is paying the price for the lavish spending of predecessors Steve Bruce and Roy Keane, with Short insisting the books now have to be balanced.

It’s not exactly the policy O’Neill wanted to hear, especially with his American chairman aiming for a top six finish next season after the impact he has had since replacing Bruce.

Now transfer targets like Wigan’s Victor Moses and Wolves’ Steven Fletcher will have to be financed by sales, with Stephane Sessegnon attracting considerable interest.

Now, we'll all admit to knowing that MON is a bit of a 'chequebook' manager, so considering that there are no direct quotes, and the article is about 20 lines long, i'd assume it's ****e.

I don't think he's gonna be getting £50million or whatever, but he will surely get maybe £10million plus the Gyan money, for starters.

I just can't see MON having taken the job, without discussing budgets.

Could be just ES being canny. No point in saying we have 100 mil to spend or everyone adds 5-10 mil onto the price of a player.

    Lets just wait and see.

I think this is fanciful journalism at best, the fact that only a few days ago Mon said he hadn't sat down with ES to discuss budgets. The net spend might not be huge if any at all but i wouldnt be surprised to see us spending 20-30m on players. We could make a profit and still improve the first team.

    I expect us to us to recieve in region of £35m from sales;
    Sessegnon £15m
    Gyan £10m
    Gardner £5m
    Richardson £5m

Like they are going to tell some tabloid wrag what their transfer policy is?? Utter ****e as usual.

Short will want to balance the books which is why he will either sell Gyan to buy a striker or keep him. There is still the bent money and we will sell a couple of players too. Talking to George Cullkain on twitter it seems like wages are our main problem and with the likes of Gordon and McCartney off the wage bill we will have some space for others.

I don't expect massive spending, I expect a couple of decent signing to take us to the next level. I expect us to spend 30m total but I expect us to recoupe 10 - 15 m of that in sales.

I think if short means anything it's that we're not going to do a Liverpool.

Since Drummaville came in and later Short, when has our transfer activity been in the public domain?

Given the current state of finances in football, the trend (apart from the odd couple of clubs) has been to spend less on transfers. Its a piece that could have been written about 99% of the managers out there.

There is no point in saying we are going to spend billions. As said before. I'm confident MON will be given what he needs.

I don't think we will be looking to make mega signings.

My dream signing would be fellaini. Think he will be moving top 4 though. Don't think he'd leave Everton for us.

Whilst this squad is infact Brucies, MON has gone on record several times this season stating that he sees very little wrong with it. The are players I think he is looking to move on..Elmo, Gyan, Angeleri, Riverios and McCartney etc but I do think hes generally happy with his current crop. Wether theres any rumours in the Richardson and Gardner gentlemans agreement deal is still to be seen. Overall I think he will invest in a decent left back and a quality striker (personally Id like him to take up the Bendtner option, but cant see it what with the wages issue) also cant see us going after Adam Johnson either (wages) he'l more than likley go after Moses as back up to Mclean and Larrson. Have to admit folks, if some of the tagets we are being linked with are genuine...then I cant say as a season ticket holder, that Iam gonna get too excited, personally think there are better options out there than Agbonlahor, Fletcher Warnock and please please NOT Karl Henry !!!

I think we are not going to get big name signings, but won't need them to push us up a level. Then next season maybe sign some talented youth. Look at oneils signings at villa, he bought experience first then got the likes of Milner & downing.

Unfortunately the players we desperately need are a couple of strikers, the least that will have to be spent on them is probably in the region of £20-£25m and their wages will not be cheap, this is why I think ~Gordon is off his wages are high and we have two cheaper keepers, Ringo is still on the books loaned to WHU is it not. Not sure who else is on big wages, but how this is going to funded will be interesting.
Personally I hope we keep Sess, and add a couple of strikers, Ji and Wickam to go out on loan, and frankly if we can reduce the wage bill by lots and bring if capital from sales everyone else is open to offers!

no quotes, and I bet this journo did not ask Short.

MON will have money to spend, Short has ambition and wants us pushing top 6 every season if not higher - he is not the kind of person (IMO) who does not put his money where his mouth is.

@Parker - i bloody hope your wrong about Sess being sold.

Probably just a mixture of bull paper talk and Short being shrewd enough to dampen down expectations/keep selling clubs sensible. Short will not be happy with a season wasted like the current one. Its basically like any vision hehad has gone on hold for year (on the pitch anyway) due to the incompetence of Steve Bruce. He'll want to press on but will be acutely aware how revealing how deep your pockets are, usually ends with selling clubs wanting an extra 2m or so.

He also has ourselves right on his doorstep and he'll be thinking you don't need to spend the world, just buy the right ones and do your homework. Like any good businessman, he'll be looking thinking he can do similar with yourselves or even better.

From an outside perspective, your 2 best transfers this season were McClean and Larsson, a few hundred thousand a free?

Samba, Hoilett, Petrov, Woodgate, Helgusson, Berbatov (maybe a bit ambitious?) all free agents in the summer, all could do a job for you, with Hoilett being a star signing where ever he goes. I don't think having a smaller budget will necessarily hurt you at all!

Hoilett will be in demand, would love us to get him if Ba goes. Would love Fellaini in midfield with Cabaye and Tiote too but now I'm dreaming.
