Just watched Wolves go down without much of a fight, along with the scenes of their supporters clapping their team off in the pouring rain. Along with 'the Ides'' earlier article on glory hunters it made me think that the life of a fan for any club outside the top 5 is one of hope and just wanting your team to 'do you proud'. I was surprised there wasn't more anger (and seats) directed at the Wolves chairman, but maybe they'd given up already. Given that most relegated teams aren't for glory hunters (i.e fans are realistic) I wondered if anyone could ever recall a relegated team not being proudly applauded off after failing miserably?
As a flip to this, I hope that no matter what happens next saturday, we stand and applaud this team that I am proud of.
Well you often see people bubbling or with haunted gazes at around 4:45 on the final day of the season. So I think many people feel sadness, maybe a sense of shame, or anger at those who escaped at the last minute and the manner in which they're gone through the trap door. Especially if the club has historically been present in that division, and the fans have yet to taste the bitter taste of being 'rel'ed.' This would probably be the case if Villa go down. Wolves were down a while back, today was merely mathematical confirmation, their goal difference is by far the poorest in all pro divisions.
It is a shame for Wolves. Ultimately the blame has to lie with the board for the sacking of Mick which clearly was a disaster. But I have not read too much about how terrible the Wolves ownership is so hopefully they will able to come back from it. Terry Connor has a bit of Steve Wigley about him, important part of the club put into a situation where he had no chance.
Harsh..! But probably true. I feel sorry for Connor. Strangely, I didn't feel sorry for Wigley. I was angry with Lowe for being such a gambler with Saints fortunes, and angry with Wigley for thinking he was even remotely up to the task. EDIT: Just thought. Some of you pepys think I may be a bit happy-clappy..? Bloody hell, you should have seen how angry I was for the rest of that season.
Dammit missed that one - people on the pitch, shouting abuse at the directors? If so good, people should, otherwise they'll just take it out on someone or something else. We could have had those owners..
Totally agree with this. Would be gutted to finish third after leading for so long, but the team has still put in a fantastic performance. Anyone who boos our lads after a season like this is my true definition of plastic.
I think they spent enough to do well and not be treading water, just didn't work out. Seem to remember the owner went in the dressing room one half-time and gave a team talk tho...
On another note.. Rangers v Portsmouth........has been confirmed for end of season friendly... Being billed as....EL BRASSICO...
I think the blow was eased as they had to beat Man City to have any chance of survival and even the most pessimisstic fan would realise they were pretty much dead and buried before kick off.
West Midlands fans always seem to have a gallows humour. A West Brom fan once asked me "How can you tell if the Albion have lost? It's 10 to 5 on a Saturday". I've got good mates who are Wolves season ticket holders (surprising number of Wolfers, as they are known in scouse, up here) and they are just looking forward to playing for something again next year. They are brilliant fans. Remember that 6-0 at their place? Everytime we scored they changed the song until it became "7-6, we're gonna win 7-6" and then applauded their team at the end. Coventry fans will give their team a good shout come Saturday. But then remember us at Forest 3 years ago. Forest fans couldn't believe our response, and the applause we gave the team that day was great. I don't think we'll be tested on Saturday, but if we are I shall personally strangle anyone not applauding!
