Couldn't see that this had been done before....thought it could be a bit of fun. For me, even though I am 100% certain we will go up next week, it was actually last year. Proper fans, good quality, good banter - enjoyed the whole year. ....and yes, typo on the date of the last season at the Dell. That's what comes of doing three things at once!
Jenny, that is cruel. I loved 1984. I was 14 and such a brilliant season. I loved last season as I shared it with my son, but ST holders last year.... becasue 1984 I had a ST, I'll go with that. ..... ask me again this time next week!!!
If memory serves, my favourite season would be 1968-69, when Saints came 7th in the 1st Division - the old Premier League. We always seemed to like 7th place and did it a couple of times in the space of three years. That season remains in my mind, because like all lids, I fancied I liked a top team from elsewhere. It was Liverpool back then. We beat them 1-0 at home, and I dashed back from the Dell to hear the other results on te radio. When I got home, my Dad asked me who won, and I said we did. He asked why I wasn't as cheerful as normal, and I answered that I wasn't sure who I supported. His answer was that if I was to support any club [he wasn't at all interested in football] that it should be my own home town. So that was it, and that's why it's my favourite season really. Because of what my Dad said, and that he'd shown interest. Can't deny Keegan's couple of seasons. they were great, but he left thinking no small club [oh yes we were back then] could ever win the league. Shame he didn't stay for another couple of years because he could have made that little difference in 1983-84. 3 points short of Liverpool. Strachan was brilliant, but I kind of knew it was going to be short lived because of empty-pockets Lowe and Co. We over-achieved like mad, in that couple of seasons, which was lovely. This season and last have to go down as second favourites for me, and will become the best seasons if we are promoted. I've never felt so buoyant about the Club overall, as I am these days.
83-84 would have to be my fav, although hard choice when you start remembering things. The fast attacking one-touch football of that time was just so exciting to watch and it was successful to, as we almost pipped Liverpool who were European giants at that time with a great team. In the Boro program from yesterdays match there is an article on David Armstrong ( Spike ! ) , and he was an instrumental part of that team - in fact Saints layer of the Season. Some midfielder Spike. I also enjoyed last season, and this season thus far - and about half 2 on Saturday i hope that it becomes the best season for a long time for us all !
Being relatively young and not being around for the Dell years, my favourite season has to be last season. The pressure wasn't as harsh and I don't remember feeling as stressed about promotion as I am this year.
I think we've had some better players and I voted for the Strachan season...so enjoyable to expect to win. This season has been about confidence and team work which has allowed players to thrive.
We all know about Nigel's romantic afternoons, but do you remember Strachan saying he hurt his knee chasing his wife upstairs. Must be something in the Southampton water.
I've voted 83/84 even though I'd just moved to London, and didn't get to many games. We just had so much talent in the team that season with the likes of Danny Wallace and Steve Moran, and really should have won the FA Cup. But mostly I look back fondly on that season because I was young and believed that life, and Saints, would just go on getting better and better. The defeat to Everton at Highbury was, in hindsight, a timely dose of reality. Last season was pretty damn good too though, and proof that if you stick in there through the bad times, in life as in football, it can all turn in your favour again.
My favourite season was actually 1989/90 when we finished 7th in the old Division 1 and hammered Liverpool 4-1 at the Dell. I will always fondly remember WGS and the 2003 FA Cup final though. I lost my father in Jan of that year so mixed emotions for me.
I enjoyed last year more purely because of the run we went on, and the results we had (6-0 etc), as well as the performances (which have dried up since xmas)
I remember when he was appointed Saints manager he was asked whether he was the right man for the job. His response: No. If you ask stupid questions I'll give you stupid answers!
Mine has to still be Keegan et al mainly because back then I could still go to all matches. Going to places like Highbury and Old Trafford believing we would get a result was just brilliant! Let's hope for some of that next year!
This was a hard one to call. Eventually went for 83/84 (that amazing win over Liverpool in their pomp swung it) but totally agree about last year. I actually loved Div 1, albeit I am glad we are out of it (only a football fan could see this as logical). Wembley one year, promotion the next. It was the stuff of dreams after the 2009 nightmare.
Did you have to mention that? It was one of the lowest points of my supporting life!! Horrible moment. How did that little squirt score past Dave Watson and Shilton with a bloody header?!?
Keegan era for me. I remember being at work and a colleague got a call from his sister (she worked at the Dell) that morning saying that there was a rumour going around the Dell that Lawrie Mc had signed Keegan - we laughed at that saying what a silly girl she was! Then the news came in that afternoon that we had signed him! There was such a buzz of expectancy at every game thereafter - I think I am right in saying that first season we did no loose a game he started in (did have one or two injuries) and he got his fair share of goals too! It felt we were really going places then. 3rd place was a great season too - if only Keegan had stayed; we might have won the league...
