EVERTON are chasing another American star – Fulham’s top-scorer Clint Dempsey.

The Goodison club already have two goalkeepers from the USA in Tim Howard – first choice for club and country - and Marcus Hahnemann.

And until the end of January they had LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan on loan for the second time.

Now, Everton boss David Moyes wants Dempsey, 29
who has only a year remaining on his contract.

Dempsey, who can operate up front, behind the main striker or in wide positions, has been one of the Premier League’s outstanding performers this season.

Everton believe they can clinch a deal at around £4million.

That’s also the figure they have earmarked to bring back Steven Pienaar from Spurs - currently on loan with them from the White Hart Lane club.

Everton reluctantly sold the South African international winger to Spurs for £3m when his contract was running out.

Dempsey would represent a coup for Moyes if he arrives on Merseyside.

But Everton, who play at Manchester United today after losing last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final to Liverpool at Wem-bley, will face competition for Dempsey if Fulham can’t persuade him to stay.

Arsenal have also been strongly linked with him.

It is believed, meanwhile, that Everton have been recommended to Dempsey by his USA team-mate Donovan.

I cannot see why Clint would leave us unless it was to get good chance of Champions League football.

Was the reporter asked to write an article to save his job?

The Star seem to be leaning toward CD going to Everton because it's an American friendly club, forgetting that he is already at probably the most American friendly club outside of America...

Coincidentally, EJ posted a tweet after the Chelsea game to CD telling him to sign a new contract at FFC. What a guy. We abuse him to the high heavens and he still wants CD to stay here.

Letting Dempsey go for 4 million to a direct competitor is stupid. We'd be better off selling him to a "top" team for that amount, or just letting him run down his contract.

That said, he'd be a great signing for Everton. But it's not going to happen: Everton do not have more money or ambition than us. Why would Dempsey take a sideways move as his potentially last pay day?

What do people make of Pienaar being a possible replacement for CD?

Not a chance. It's a champion's league team or nothing. My money is on Arsenal.

It wouldn't be my ideal pick, but he'd be decent.

To be honest, if we lose Deuce it will change the way we play. Deuce has become integral through consistent performances throughout the past few years. I don't think someone will come in and play that role, they'd have to earn it. I think we'd be better off using money from Dempsey to buy someone to compete with the Pog, and letting Dembele and Ruiz fight it out for the role in the middle.

EDIT: Also, I can't really see Pienaar going anywhere but Everton in the summer. Look at the difference between him there and him at Spurs. He'd be foolish to go elsewhere, including coming here.

No thanks, too old for my liking. Dempsey will be replaced by either Frei or Kaca. Peinaar is 30 so he would just be a short term solution.

Someone has to tell Clint 'The Ghost' Dempsey that the grass may not be greener on the other side:smiley:

Firstly I think teams will try and get Dempsey on the cheap, but why should we give into them, we should
ask top price for a mid-fielder scoring goes who can double up as a Striker and see if they want to pay.

Clint may find that with a bigger club he may not get the game time with them, and may even struggle to
get off the bench if he is not playing regularly. Again going abroad, these teams may want instant success
and if he doesn't settle quickly.
For me his success with Fulham is because the fans haven't put pressure on him, with Jol he's been given license
to express himself and be more relaxed in his defensive duties, there's more to his game than just goals, he creates as well.

He fits into our team, will he fit in the same way if he goes elsewhere?

Sounds like a total non-story to me. If Dempsey was available for £4m then every team in the Premier League would be trying to sign him. Besides, I doubt Everton can match whatever Fulham are offering him in terms of salary. My money's also on Arsenal if he goes anywhere, with an outside bet on Man Utd.

I don't think the move will come down to money. We have more than likely made him an offer of something around 50-60k per week, which would make him the highest paid at the club. There aren't going to be many teams to offer more than that for him, as he would more than likely be only a squad player, coming off the bench, nobody pays 60k for a bench warmer, unless you're City, but they're one of the only teams not interested.

If he goes, it will be for CL, not money.

Whoever we are selling to, we shouldn't accept a sum as low as £4million. For that money, we're better getting one more season out of him and letting him go for nothing. I suspect, if he wants to go, an offer in the region of £8-10million would be what the club would accept. Whether the club would accept £4mil in January may well be another matter.

Jol has already said that if Dempsey rejects the new contract then he will get him sold ASAP, so I can't see Jol keeping him until January when he could have an entire summer to find a replacement instead of only having a month come January.

But will he sell him at any price? All I'm saying is that £4million won't be enough.

I think clubs are aware that if we don't get a sufficient offer (8-10 million) then we will gladly hang onto him until his contract expires. £4 million won't get you an awful lot in the transfer market so I think Jol would rather squeeze 6 more months out of him rather than let him go for that. Also, if we let his contract run down then he will be 30 reaching 31, what top club is going to want him then?

For me it's either we sell him this summer for a substantial fee or he goes for nothing in 12 months time.

    Dempsey ? 4 mil 29 yrs old

Zamora ? 4 mil 31 (sold to QPR)

Of late, I dont think apart from being two & a half years older
Zamora, in the last season or so does not compare, plus
age is against him making a "Lazarus"type revival.

For me, I want Demps to stay, but should he go 8/10m would
not be an unreasonable asking price

The longer he goes without signing a contract, the more I think the CL thing wouldn't be a deal-breaker for him. I don't think he'd turn down Liverpool, Spurs or Chelsea whether they're in the CL next season or not. Loyalty is long gone in a footballers psyche, I don't expect Demps to be any different. I'm sure he'd want to go and play with Gerrard and Suarez, or Torres and Drogba, or Modric and Bale than slum it with us.

Uncharacteristically negative of me, I know!
