As for what you said RE: High St, Museum's Quarter, Whitefriargate etc area, imagine all of Hull being like that, had Adolf Hitler never been born. York was very lucky. This'll show just how much of a pasting Adolf's boys inflicted on Hull in W.W.II: http://www.rhaywood.karoo.net/bombmap.htm
Back in the day, York was Hull's poor relation and unlike Hull, couldn't replace old buildings. York's Tourists are mainly just looking at buildings that survived slum clearance in a similar way to the recent ones on the Council renewals scheme. Perhaps we should take heed of history and save some space on Savoy Road for coach parties?
Savoy Road is built roughly on the site of an old, ruined brickworks I used to play adventures around when I was a kid... So - it has a (buried) history on-site!
Well, since its the only one out of these I have never visited I will go with Bradistan, I always enjoy visiting new places and as someone who has never left Europe, the chance of travelling to Asia in just an hour appeals to me
Seriously though - most towns and cities had their own, local brickyards/brickworks (assuming they had the right kind of clay!).
I do like what's happened to Hull over the last few years, it's really come on as a city. My dad really helped with the regeneration projects and I was really impressed with the plans for the fruit market district, although I think he left the project before completion (has it even started yet?) As for other towns in Yorkshire, York is definetly top, followed closley by Whitby, which historically is one of my favourite places to go. I think the worst town I've ever been to in Yorkshire is Staithes. I went to get some fish and chips there and there were 8 year old kids roaming round with baseball bats. Not that they had anything to smash, pretty much all the windows were boarded up anyway (NOT an exagerration). I thought I had it bad, I grew up in Skirlaugh.
Maybe John's original post provided a clue as to whether he knew or not as to whether it wasn't in Yorkshire. "I like Lincoln too thats a nice city but I'm aware that aint in Yorkshire, I'm just an old fashioned type and it takes more than a few night clubs and shopping centres to turn my head he he he"
There are many cities in Europe which had far worse bomb damage than Hull in WW2 but rebuilt their cities a lot better. Hamburg had more casualties than the whole of Britain, many cities were virtually razed tot he ground. We were let down by poor planning and a government after the war which didn't appear interested in our city.
And a lack of enterprise and local benefactors. Hull winning in the poll at the moment, shockingly enough.
Dresden got it bad! Now I'm not saying they did'nt deserve it after all they started it by my god I went there in the 70's when it was still in east germany and some parts still looked like an atomic bomb had hit the place. East Berlin was'nt much better but I'm sure they have it all cleared up by now
You plank, if you'd looked properly you'd have seen I was joking. After all, I had highlighted the words "I'm aware it aint in Yorkshire".
Yes, but Britain and the US actually gave money to Germany to rebuild! Germany did not give money to us to rebuild - we were too soft. Hull did NOT get any money to rebuild after WW2 - Hull rebuilt itself. Hull was offered some money by the government to rebuild, but only if Hull was rebuilt under the Abercrombie plan, which would have seen a dual carriageway steam-roller right through what is now the Old Town - because Hull City Council stuck two fingers up to the government and said 'we're not having that rubbish!' meant we got no money to rebuild - I'm glad they did though, otherwise we'd have ended up looking like large chunks of Coventry.
It is redeveloping 'organically' - businesses like Dinostar (dinosaur museum), FRuIT (entertainment venue), Studio Eleven (art gallery), Museum of Club Culture (obvious) and FUDGE2 (new bistro to open by Fudge on Prinny Ave) as well as a jewellery makers and the 'Humber Micro Brewery' set to open soon are making it a decent little cluster. The Wilson is a new restaurant open on the marina and the owners have bought the old Baltic Wharf - not sure what they're doing with it yet though. Along with this - Hull City Council have put in for ERDF funding to build The River (Amazon-inspired sister project to The Deep - next to Fruit Market in Dry Dock) and Wykeland Group have put in for funding from the same pot to build a massive 'Digital/Creative business centre' next door to it (land between dry dock and Fruit Market).
I went up the rebuilt Frauenkirche in 2008 but there was a lot of works going on in the AltStadt and lots of it still looked like a bomb site. I'm guessing is looks a damn site better 3 years down the road.
Sorry to intrude on your little spat. Hornet fan in peace. I just took part in your vote as my son is at York Uni so I thought I should support him (although I have to confess Beverley is actually rather nice too) By coming on your board maybe I can encourage a little bit of cross board participation as if 606 does go - and it will- then the more not606 users there are the better - and cross thread banter is one of the things that made 606 so good. Oh - and one last plea - will you guys please stop posting on here - we have only got about 3,000 posts and are in second place and have no chance of catching you unless you slow down - how did you get so busy - some clubs in the Championship have not got to 100 yet Good luck in reaching at least the play offs - you seem to have timed your run pretty well
If we manage to dispatch Millwall on Saturday then the game at Vicarage Road is probably make-or-break for both teams. Hopefully we can get a similar result to our last visit. Unfortunately, we no longer have Myhill's acrobatics in goal.
Should be a good game - we have been less impressive at home than in some of our away games though - always good to have the Tigers down though
