I think it all depends where you live though, as some state schools can be brilliant grades and education wise (where I went for sixth form - Emmanuel College in Gateshead is one of the top schools in the country and that was, well an academy but still state funded with private backing and free!).
If I end up settling near a good school, I'll probably send them there instead! As much as I love my area now, I hate to settle in Leeds as any hypothetical kids will come out with a horrible accent!

Grammar school system - is that similar to the the Grammar Schools down south? As in where they have to take an 11 plus exam to choose which kind of school you go to, if it is that's a cracking idea imo, the old system of education was clearly a lot better than it is now!

That's a case with a lot of mental illnesses though - we all have some form of them in varying degrees, but those who are diagnosed with them - have a severe form of them, certainly enough to be recognised as an illness.
It's all chemical imbalances really, it still fascinates me in that regard that you can affect emotions, how someone perceives the world & even make someone tell the truth, all through giving them certain chemicals (although it's why I have problems with doctors as they're too quick to over-diagnose and prescribe pills for anything now - one of my friends was prescribed Prozac for slight depression and she used to have ridiculous up & down mood swings, that she didn't really before).

Yeah, where you live is definitely key...My school was generally recognised as the most academic in my local area, but had I wanted to travel (20/30 minutes by bus) I could've gone somewhere more prestigious. Only lived 15 minutes walk away though, so seemed fairly pointless.

Yeah that's the grammar school system. In fairness, I do see why it was scrapped, if you fail your 11+ exam for whatever reason, it then becomes insanely difficult to progress through the education system. It's a lot of pressure to put on a single exam for a child, to basically decide their whole future. Having said that, I do think that state education is inhibited by the fact that highly academic kids are pushed into an environment where academic ability is seen as a negative. I know I'm guilty of playing down my ability and reducing my work rate to avoid judgement. Pathetic now I look back on it, but no-one wanted to be labled a geek.

As for medical diagnosis. It's a really tricky one. My Dad is a doctor, while my Mam is special needs coordinator and a primary school teacher. There is a lot of pressure on the diagnosis side, from the education side to have these kids labeled. Simply because without the label, the government won't provide the staff or funding to help these kids manage in a school environment.

On the other hand, you see too many kids become aware of and abuse their label; "I can't write that, I'm dyslexic", "I'm not being naughty, it's my ADHD" etc. Plus, as you say, sometimes there is an over importance placed on medication, which quite often, the children don't need...I always think of the South Park episode when the kids all get put on Ritalin as the perfect example!

That was me. I actually received two negative reps for that post. I presume one was from Tash, which is fair enough, but I don't know who gave me the other one. I figured it was someone either with autism or with a family member who has autism, and may have found the topic slightly offensive.

Either that, or someone just fancied being an arse.

A few months before our final exams at 16 we were informed that if you were proven to be dyslexic you'd get extra time added on to complete your exams. I think it was an additional 15/30 minutes per exam.

150 people were lined up at the school medical centre the next morning seeing if we could 'qualify'.

I failed but gave it a damn good go misreading eye charts etc. I think they found 2 people who actually were though :)

    <laugh> Rep!

I don't think it matters if what he said wasn't directed towards anyone, if he had been warned about it previously then he shouldn't have said it.

    Likewise...
