Just had a big bust up with the bosses and probably said a few things I shouldn't have <ok>

I passed my college last summer and been doing the duties of a senior technician for the past 2 and a half years, yet they seem to be unable to even promote me from an apprentice level.

So the big boss asked me into his office to discuss options etc and he says he wants me to join the ICE as a technician member, which involves doing quarterly reports and a lot of work in my own time. I told him I'm not willing to put any effort into my training/work until I'm promoted, given a wage rise and they agree to put me through an extra course. Told him that I've completely lost interest in the job due to the bosses being clueless ****ing morons.

I've been considering packing this in anyway and taking a completely different career path but hadn't told any of them. Now he's ****ing raging with me. Can see my career change happening sooner rather than later <laugh>

I've been on at them since last July to make my promotion official but they keep saying it's someone else that deals with it.

I'm one of the lower earners here as well and not been given a wage rise, when people on £70,000 have been given 10%+ rises <grr>

Get yourself offshore. Sparkies and Electrical Techs earn about £50-60k minimum in the North Sea for the half-decent companies plus you only have to work 4 weeks out of every 12.

I don't have any experience in either of them. I've sat at a desk every day since I left school doing drawings <grr> Was thinking of quitting next summer. Would give me time to save up as much money as possible <ok>

Tell them to stick the ****in job, as you are travelling to the Amazon Rainforest in search of the rarest moth on the planet (psycosis mothis eastkilbridius). As it's saliva is the only known cure to man for the equally rare female breast disorder, Nipplus Dissapearius.

That'll put their ****ing gas at a peep <ok>

    One of the things I shouldn't have said;

Boss - "Hows your training record looking?"

Me - "It would better shoved up your ****ing arse"

I love the adrenaline after a good argument <ok>

<laugh> I did Marine Biology at Uni FFS, I didn't even know how a motor worked really until I was three months into my job and I had to diagnose faults with them.

All you need to do is pay for your own Offshore Survival and start applying for jobs. You just need to be switched-on and keen. Most of the folk out here aren't qualified but the company will put you through all that stuff. All the Mechs and Sparks are getting their NVQ's for free. I have to sign off their forms saying they're competent in Condition Monitoring and some of them have been on this platform since before I was born.

You'll get a job no bother.

I don't think I'd survive off shore <laugh> They'd ****ing eat me alive

I think I would get really bored really fast out there as well. Since my school days if I didn't find something interesting I would just switch off. Had the feeling here for a while but after all this ****e I'm determined to leave and pursue something completely different.

Is there a minimum age for offshore work?

It's a bit different for other people offshore. I'm not really indicative of what it's like. Most people out here have to graft fairly hard.

Still it can be ****e boring. Depends what platform you end up on. There are over 200 of them so I can't comment on them all but if you get a good one then the time passes really fast and you've got a decent wage coming in too. Also really depends on whether you'd want to stay offshore as a career or just do what I'm doing and use it as a stepping stone to make some money and move abroad.

should have my review this/next wk. i've not had a pay rise for 2 yrs (to be fair though 11 months of that was spent in HRH green prison), they're moving us into the centre of edinburgh in a couple of months which'll increase my commute by 1.5 hours+ a day when i already travel for an hour and work 9-6 and obviously that'll increase my travel costs as well so it'd better get a good one <ok>

i'm still looking for work elsewhere but i want better money until i **** off <laugh>

I think what I do next has to be something that will be a career, rather than just a job to make money. When I got into this it was more a case of being pushed in the direction, rather than wanting to do it myself. The wage is ****ing ****e as well for someone that does as much work as I do (or did in the past) I should have realised at college when I was completely bored ****less, and in the presentations I need to go to.

We had a wage freeze here for over a year, and then got an email in December saying it was over. I got taken into the bosses office and told I wouldn't be getting one, and only 20% would be. Turned out it was mainly bosses and a few engineers that got them. Loads of people are pissed off but doing nothing about it. In the past I worked til 7, 8 at night and working at home. Was in at 7 every morning. Monday I left at half 3, yesterday I got in at 11 and left at 3.

i'm the same as you mate, kinda fell into it but not really interested.

the most dangerous thing is an alright/ok paid/semi satisfactory job you'll get stuck in and wake up when your 60

Thats pretty much my exact situation. My brother started the same thing 2 years before me and it was easy to get into. When I was 17 getting paid pennies didn't matter, but I'm almost 22 and feel that if I stay much longer I'll either blow my brains out or sink into a depression. If I leave now I would have enough money saved up to go to uni for a few years and still stay away from home <ok>

I've been trying to get a wage rise and a promotion that I should have had automatically for the last 10 months <yikes>

I was hoping to wait til next summer when I could have a few more grand saved up. The courses I'm looking at have high demand for them so applying now would probably be too late <doh>

What I mean is LR, the interviews for places on the course are going on just now. I would wait and apply in September then get an interview for the following April, in the meantime I would keep this job and put aside maybe 6K over the year. I could use one of my engineering lecturers at the same place as a reference <laugh> <laugh>
