Like you say intent is the key. I was brought up and educated to do things like that. At the end of the day if you open a door for somebody (like you I would do it for anybody) and they get offended because you have been polite or deferential it is actually them with the problem and not you. Similarly if you use the pc terms of address and somebody is still offended then they need to consider whether they are overly sensitive. You can only do so much and people have to meet you half way.

Got accused of only opening the door for a couple of girls as an excuse to look at their asses once.

The thing that most annoyed me was that they were ugly as ****.

To be fair, when Tash used the term 'packi shop' it was a throw away comment that wasn't intentionally derogatory. I personally don't use the term myself but plenty of people in my town still do and I would've whilst growing up without even considering it racist or inflammatory.

As I said on that particular thread, I've done a lot of work on this for my degree and I used a very similar analogy (context, in the pub with your mates etc.) The PC element of todays society is ridiculous, calling christmas decorations 'holiday lights', stopping kids singing baa baa black sheep, it's absolutely mental!

I'm not a racist person, nor am I sexist...There are biological differences between men and women, black, asian and white people. Whether it's the pigment in their skin or their typical muscle make up. Facial/bodily features or the way our brains release chemicals. These differences exist and there whether people like it or not. It doesn't make anyone better or worse, more or less deserving in job opportunities nor does it affect my opinion of someone's personality.

Sometimes attempting to ignore racial and cultural differences leads to more alienation and offence than anything else!

I was state school but holding the door open for people is one of my personal pet hates, I will make a point of saying "You're welcome" if they show no gratitude, it's simple manners! Ours wasn't quite as extreme as yours but uniform cards for top buttons and demerits were pretty common.

So he used a term that was alright for Uncle Albert to use in Only Fools And Horses in 1985.

This is true! I'm not disputing that Leazes or AG should have banned him...I think it'll give Tash a bit of time to consider when and how certain terms are appropriate, just don't think he was intentionally being racist or offensive!

Like Jade Goody - Indians burning effigies of her for calling Shilpa Shetti 'Shilpa Popadom' and using a poor imitation of an Indian accent...Stupid and ill-concieved yes, but racist? No! It's no different to Keith Lemon shouting 'POTATO' at Irish people and putting on a poor Irish accent!

    Aye I do that like!
Ah it was horrible, we had to have elocution lessons as well, made me more determined to keep my accent if anything, only for it to start fading when I moved away for Uni! It was funny because I went to sixth form at Emmanuel and that was supposed to be strict, but it was a real cakewalk compared to my old school! It did teach me some good though going there, such as the importance of good manners, which too many people these days don't seem to have!

My flatmate went to Private schools in Harrogate and Leeds, he got full scholarships through his rugby but he said he loved it, wouldn't consider sending his own kids anywhere else, where as my Dad spent all his time in Boarding Schools (due to Parents in the Air Force) and said he wanted us all to go to state school - I think there are definite benefits to either!

When I have kids I think I'll send them private, just a non religious private one! Through experience the Christian one I went to was OTT strict.
TBF it wasn't that bad until year 9; it used to feel like a family school and it did only have 100 pupils at one point from nursery to 6th form.
But then it moved premises from year 6 onwards and then in year 9, the headmistress retired and her son came in and wrecked the whole feel of it (he was more a businessman than a headmaster - you could say a school version of Mike Ashley).
Towards the end kids were getting dropped off in ridiculous posh cars and there was all sorts of daft rules and regulations, I did somehow end up deputy headboy though!
