I saw Blur at Hull Arena and their performance was as icy as the rink - I think it must be the venue. City Hall on the other hand has had some corkers (Ocean Colour Scene being one of them).
I saw Kings of Leon at the Ice Arena and it was a good night. The City Hall is a better all round venue though.
I saw Mos Def, a hip hop artist last year and it was dirge. Hip hop is hit and miss, I've seen the Bestie Boys a few times and they have been superb. Plus, I saw the Charlatans a couple of years ago and they were dull, yet 15-20 years ago they were excellent.
Clapham Tiger - do you watch City in the old mans pub, near the Bread & Roses pub, in Clapham? - We may have met watching City in the playoffs a couple of years ago?
I agree with you about live hip hop acts being hit and miss. I saw Cyprus Hill live last summer and they weren't the best but they worked the crowd well. New dance music can be hit and miss and all. Sometimes they over do it. Their shows are generally better than rock acts though like their light shows and graphical stage sets- 2 MANY DJs, Deadmau5 and Underworld were anyway.
The Ocean Colour Scene gig at the City Hall about a year ago also ranks in my top ten, Craddock is a class act.
yeah saw Oasis just before they split here in France '09 and Liam could barely manage Slide Away, however I'm glad I saw them, I enjoyed it as I love them & some of his slagging off the audience who brought Man U banners was fun.. Bob Dylan last year was a touch banal, again nice to see the fella but he re-arranged most of the stuff so u didn't recognize it..
Hey man - no I only just moved there I'm afraid. I am looking for a pub to watch city in though! I know who were the worst bands to actually play with - Scouting for girls were a huge bunch of cnuts (no suprise there), as to were Foals. The guitar player from Bloc Party was an odd kid too. Nicest were a band called Air Traffic - dunno if they got big in Hull, were around for about 5 minutes. Peggy Sue are really nice as well. I met Ian Brown once in Terminal studios in London and he was asking if he could leave his car overnight as he was to stoned to drive! He is a midget in real life.
Bjorn Again.......I dont know if it counts cos i left after about 20 minutes. They were miming, the guitar play was over dubbed and everyone was dressed like idiots. And to cap it all, the group I went with at the City Hall paid ã25 each for a ticket plus ã20 I spent in Punch whilst the rest of the party watched the concert!!
Was that when they played during the Great Escape tour (presumably 95 or early 96?), I was there and remember being quite disappointed, despite Blur being one of my favourites. I'm not sure I dare tell the story of the route I took when I missed the turn off for the Ice Arena though, one of my most embarrassing moments!
Lightning seeds, City hall, about 8 years ago. Pish. I've only been to ice arena once, for an oasis gig. I've seen them a few times and were excellent every time. We should have a new thread asking 'worst venue for a gig' Ice arena every time. Elf n safety wont allow it to be filled. Best gig, Roger Waters at M.E.N. unbeatable
Hey man - no I only just moved there I'm afraid. I am looking for a pub to watch city in though! Clapham Tiger - Try the Manor Arms, 128 Clapham Manor Street, off Clapham High Street - they usually show a number of games in there, though it is generally and surprisingly, sparsely populated for City games, nevertheless an outpost to ...'keep the Hull flag flying high!'
Hmm, go on then.... I am originally from Brid, and still lived there back then. I hadn't been driving too long so was a bit naive on the roads. I got to the Ice Arena but missed the turn off so ended up heading away from the City centre in a westerly direction. I thought, no problem, I'll just take the next exit, turn round and head back again, unfortunately I didn't dare take a turn off until I knew that I could get back on the right road again, and the first exit I came to where I knew I could definitely do that was........ Howden on the M62 A nice 45 minute detour!!
Young man, you have been judged by a group of your peers, and found to be Guilty as charged. I am adjourning this hearing, and, calling Lord Chief Justice DJ to pass sentence upon you, and god save your soul!
