I think the Olympics is a very good shout for him.

    My first choice England midfield.

    --------Parker---Wilshere---------
    -Milner----Gerrard------Downing-

Spearing could make as good a back up as any one. The only other worthy back up to Parker I can think of is barry.

Was Parker playing to such a good consistent standard when he was Jays age? No.

Of all the dross we've seen this year though Jay has been one of the few shining lights so I'm a bit surprised to see some Reds being so critical in all honesty. If, as has been discussed before on here, Henderson had performed as well as Jay has this year the same people would be full of praise for him just because he cost a wheelbarrow full of dollars <ok> Jay isn't a fashionable type of player so his hard work and all round contribution often gets overlooked but as far as I'm concerned I think he's ****in ace <cool>

Yes. The England team needs refreshing.

Stuart Pearce for manager for me to. Largly down to the fact that he has already had a few years with the players, with some good results.

What does the answer to that question matter really as neither are good enough in the long term.

I don't care what Parker was doing when he was Jay's age, i mean since when has Parker being the standard we judge what we want from our players? Is it since he became overrated? Or is it since he plays for a team doing well?

I think the criticism is justified and its not like saying he is sh*te is it? It is saying, as it stands i don't see him as anything else but adequate back up and sadly if we want to progress we have to set the standard of the players, even squad players at higher than adequate. For too long our squad has been adequate or lower, it is about time we looked to improve it so either he transforms his talent or we sell and replace him. I just don't think from what i've seen of him it'll be the first option as i don't see potential in him like i do with other younger players.

As i said you can't fault his work ethic or his passion but sadly that doesn't make good players.

No the comparison with Parker is because he occupies a similar position for England that Jay would if he was ever picked.

Football is all about opinions and you see nothing that Jay brings to us as a team and that's fair enough but for me having a young lad who cost us nothing who looks composed, growing in confidence, decent range of passing, decent positional sense and can win headers can only be a good thing. Plus for me the additional bonus of his great work ethic and passion might not make a good player but it certainly helps young players develop further and quicker than those who haven't got those attributes.

What has there position for England got to do with anything, i was asked whether i'd swap Parker for Spearing for us so that's irrelevant and my point of neither are good long term options stands.

Yes football is all about opinions, so we'll have to agree to disagree as i don't see Spearing making it.Yes he is adequate cover as it stands but that's all. All the attributes you think he has well i disagree apart from the positional sense, rest of him is average/adequate. And of course passion and good work ethic helps progression in young players but only those with the talent to make it too.

    A) The thread is titled Spearing for England hence (I presume) the comparisons with Parker.

    B) Spearing has the talent to have played 30 odd Prem games at the age of 23 in one of the toughest positions in modern football, and in one of the toughest leagues in the world (many great holding midfielders never settle into that position until later in their careers). I don't think many would claim he'll ever be a world beater but every team/squad needs lads like him with decent ability, potential to get better, a solid mature head on his shoulders, never rocks the boat and who would bite arms and legs off just to keep playing for LFC. As far as I'm concerned I'll be more than happy if JS is with us for his whole career.

    Very true.

One thing the FA has to tackle if they ever want England to win some thing is the power clubs have over the England team. They would probably deny its existence, but it happens far to often.
