ARSENE WENGER admits that foreign players are to blame for introducing diving into the English game. But Arsenal’s French manager says that, while overseas footballers brought the dark arts with them, the natives have caught on fast.

Wenger was quoted to have said, “Yes, foreign players brought this into the English game. But I must say the English players learn quickly.

“The foreign players have brought good and bad things. In England you respected two things — that you got well kicked but, on the other side, that they did not go down for nothing.

“Another thing I admired here in England is that you never surrounded the referees to give a yellow card to somebody else, you let the referee make a decision. But that has gone as well. Not everywhere, but there is a trend now to surround the referee and give a yellow card — and that never happened when I arrived.”

Good to see Arsene putting that one in, just incase they think the sunshines out of English players backsides...

Interesting points, do people agree on this?

On a separate point, that guy in the green bib looks very familiar....Also whos the guy behind him?

This article is just begging for a rival fan to say Wenger is a hypocrite.

Its just a typically mis-quoten piece of bad journalism.

All his saying is that diving was brought into the English game(which it was) by foreign players but the English took in on board very quickley.

You only have to look at Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney to see that.

Actually NO. The English players we have do not dive. Walcott was the last person, he admitted his mistake, apologised and doesn't do it anymore. We are one of the cleanest teams out there now.

Diving has always happened in football. The only difference nowadays are the number of cameras at a game being able to look at an incident from every angle. When i was at Anfield this season i was convinced that Chesney had taken out Suarez and that it was a definate pen.The people around me all thought it was a pen.At half-time i overheard a lad telling his mates that Suarez had dived, apparently someone has texted this lad that they'd seen the different camera views which showed a dive.Years ago the penalty would have just been given and that would have been the end of it

You could understand diving in the old days with players like "Chopper" Harris around. but what reason do these fools have to dive now, what with football almost being a non contact sport ?

it was wiser to dive when Chopper was after you - hitting the ground was softer than his boots.

Yes, he is the least obvious but he always falls over at key areas around the box, to gain freekicks. Gerrard and Cole are/were bad offenders too, going over when there was minimal contact when playing for club and country....

Lampard doesn't dive. You're watching what you want to watch there I'm afraid <ok>.

  17. This is an British problem - it used to be the other way round, but now the the Brits lead the way when it comes to cheating. It's time for the media to stop taking every opportunity to blame it on foreigners.

I agree there are a lot of british players who dive, but other countries are far wose. Spain for example, it's seen as a skill over there, part of the game.

  19. I disagree... the Spaniards no doubt over react to the slightest touch, but I see less of the pre meditated cheating of the likes of Young and Rooney than I do in Spain. In Spain, they make the most of any touch to make sure the ref sees it. Players like Young actually go after a defender throw their leg at him and then swan dive.

Won't argue there, but like I said - it's seen as a skill in Spain whereas is shouldn't.
