The FA need to clamp down on diving. Ashley Young has been in the headlines recently for it. Here is what I think should be done. Repeated diving = Match ban. I think if players dive repeatedly they should get a match ban. Whether they win a penalty/ free kick or not. I do not mean repeatedly in one game. I mean repeatedly over the course of the season. I feel when ever a question of a dive is raised that has not been caught and punished by a referee it should be reviewed by a panel, who will decide whether it is a dive or not. If they decide it is then the player will get a strike. Three strikes over the course of the season and they get a match ban. The FA should be able to react to questions on diving raised by match officials, pundits, TV coverage, FA members and players/ managers involved in the game. (Though players and managers must be warned about questioning dives for the sake of it, just hoping). This may sound harsh, or extreme, but diving is cheating, immoral, and is casting a shadow over our game. Diving could possible affect a team in extreme ways, especially as your final league position has a major financial impact on a club, clubs could end up relegated or out of cups, missing out on Europe, players could get sent off when they are innocent and more. Stick to this rule and it wont take long for players to take notice. In recent weeks referees have felt the wrath over not punishing diving. But players dont care about referees and will just try it on even more. Diving needs stamping out. http://i.imgur.com/AjtC0.gif
I would like to see players being sent off for diving. The problem is that it is hard to administer and there will be mistakes., especially without the use of video technology. I think a better solution would be to retrospectively punish players.
Firstly we need to take away the fans' demand for success, then the players won't do whatever's necessary to win. Can you do that?
I thought about red cards. But the thing is, some dives are winning penalties, which makes you assume the referee didnt notice the dive. Which leaves it unpunished. But it must be punished. The more players get away with it the more they will do it.
According to the dark knight Suarez 'dives' but Young is like a lightly fried egg because he 'goes over easy'.
Obviously we couldn't change penalty decisions etc. retrospectively but a punishment for diving would go a long way towards stamping it out, imo. However, we've been waiting for a long time for the FA to say or do anything useful about anything, so I don't hold out too much hope.
Its stupid that TV footage is proving players are diving but nothings being done. When Rivaldo done the famous dive at the 2002 World Cup he was only caught on TV and got heavily punished. That should happen every single time. When the referee from United v QPR got punished, why wasnt young punished? The referee made a mistake. The incident happened very quickly. Ashley Young cheated, Ashley Young made the bigger mistake. Then he repeated it. If he is not punished he will do it 100 times more.
Ashley Young dive was terrible for football. If it was Suarez..it has to be a yellow card and no penalty.
Another thing that could be said is: Handling the ball to score or save a goal is a red card offence. So diving to win a penalty/ free kick in strong position or to get a player sent off should be a red card to. The pitch could be set into zones, where diving in some areas is a straight red. Players mostly dive in and around the box any way, and it has a larger impact on the game if they get the kick. The issue though is refs dont police this well enough. So we need punishments in place for the dives that dont get spotted. Judging by that, maybe one dive unspotted in the red zone should be a ban, and just repeated diving in the yellow zone. Luis Garcia missed the 2006 FA cup final because he was red carded for a dive. I was furious at Garcia, gutted he missed the final, but he deserved it. I remember being extra disappointed in him because it was just like the Reina Robben incident in the same season.
This fella is having a laugh. http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/footba...rsene-wenger-wants-three-match-ban-for-divers The likes of him and Ferguson only call for action against diving when an incident goes against their teams yet turn a blind eye or make limp excuses when their own players are guilty of it.
A large problem is how the media report these incidents imo. If the back headline read, "Young dives to win United's opening goal" instead of, "controversial goal amidst United win" fans would soon get on his back alot more. He should be publically humiliated for such a dive, not have it glossed over as 'controversial'. Also as PMK said, managers need to grow some balls if they want it to stop because as long as they defend their own players, it will continue.
The ref already has 2 sanctions. An offence of simulation and one of ungentlemanly conduct. The problem is that without reference to video evidence both offences can be very difficult to adjudicate in real time. Hence we have Suarex being booked when he was fouled and Young gaining a penalty when he dived.
News papers etc should have no say. What I mean by TV and pundits etc is the match day coverage and highlights where they are showing the game on TV. On these shows they do all the hard work for the FA, with all the camera angels, slow motion etc, so they do have a valid view on the situation.
Well this seems a stupid idea. Whats a dive? Go on, explain exactly what a dive is and how that can be incorporated into the rules and give the referee the power to make judgement. Contact? What level of contact is required to know an individual over, a faint touch or a full on kick to the face? Are all players the same? Is is easier to knock Drogba over than say SWP? Just a few points that have to be taken into consideration. The only time a player should be banned for diving is when they do something like Carroll did v Newcastle. That was blatant cheating and is without question. If there is a debate, which in the Ashley Young incident there is, then its impossible to make a fair judgement and impossible to hand down a ban.
Maybe Gerrard should be exposed for the massive cheat he is. A player who cheats in a Champions League final...... tut tut tut. Have a look up at the meaning of the term dive in football circles, its when a player goes down without contact. At worst Ashley over simulated his fall. The contact is as clear as you can possibly get. In recent times there are several incidents of Liverpool players going to ground when the nearest player to them is several feet away, if you want to discuss diving look a little closer to home first and ask yourself, why hasnt Kenny done something about it.
