Morning all - Chilly start in Bandit Country at -2C and had to scrape the frost off of the Zil. But a nice bright morning in West West London - I was just starting my All Bran & Banana breakfast when the bloody fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate the building....luckily I could ram it down before I was forced out. Regarding the "supporters" who ignored the minutes silence yesterday - what was the silence for? Was it for the Italian player who died playing or Hillsborough? Although I do not condone anyone breaking a silent tribute for any reason, I have to agree with Alan Davies for his views on Hillsborough..
I do not think so. I think the observation of what happens is getting greater. The referees are under more pressure and that causes them to make mistakes. If there was less pressure on the referees they would appear to perform better and probably would. Also the rules are not complicated, except offside, as the players are generally not too clever and would not understand anything very difficult. What is a problem is the amount of money in British football, football is not a sport any more it is a very big business with all sorts of things it did not have even five years ago. And why do these people feel they have to tell all on twit.
Morning All from a bright but breezy rural France. The man from the meteo suggests that we might be getting some rain on and off during the week. Was it for the Italian player who died playing or Hillsborough? Both I believe w_y. I heard Alan Davies on the radio and didn't think that he said much that should be objected to.
Thanks for the coffee Ak - Morning all - ice on the car this morning still can't complain it has been a mild winter so not so much scrapping this year. I bet Tesco de-icer sales are well down.
OFH - I think he said what a lot of people think but dare not because of the Scouse backlash. Why should Liverpool dictate when they should or should not play their matches - I wonder if they ever get through to the later stages of the Champions League, they will be able to dictate to UEFA?
Morning all. It felt very strange having my alarm go off this morning for the first time in 3 weeks. I even forgot how to turn it off, so ended up putting it on snooze and being woken up again 5mins later. To clarify that, i set one alarm for 7:00 every day so i am up to text Kiri, and then go back to bed until i need to get up to get ready. It is very sunny here, but it is still very cold too, its very deceptive. As for the Hillsborough debate i am with a lot of people and think Liverpool should be told to shut up and play their matches!! As far as i know none of the players are directly related to any of the casualties and therefore can play! How about Manchester Utd dont play on the anniversary of the Munich air disaster, Bolton never play on the date when Muamba collapsed, Villa dont play on the date when Petrov was diagnosed with Leukemia. I have no objection to the minute silence, as it is just a mark of respect. But to re-arrange a game would be too far.
Why do the people of Liverpool react badly to anything saying they were wrong in the Hillsborough deaths. It is common knowledge that if the Liverpool supporters had arrived when they should there would not have been a problem as the police would have done their job properly without added pressure? If they do not play on this day why not the anniversary of the tragedy in Heysel Stadium as well or the birthday of Bill Shankley?
Nothing like a good fight on a cold winters morning to get the blood flowing though the veins - Dyslexia - Lures KO
Morning all (sort of!). thanks for the latte Ak Hmm, i'm in disagreement with you all over Liverpool and the Hillsborough memory. 23 years isn't that long..it's still fresh in a lot of people's minds, and a lot of people going to that game would have been there that day. They would rather go to Anfield and remember it there...in their own traditional way. Yes, every now and then, it won't be during the week and it will be a match day. I don't see the problem of showing a little compassion and moving their match to a different day. Yes, it gave Chelsea a day less, but that could have been avoided by either playing both matches on the Saturday, say one at 12.30 and one at 6...or one on the Friday night and the other on the Saturday. Friday night for two London clubs wouldn't have been a hardship, and let's face it, if the FA cared about Chelsea and the Champions League that much, they wouldn't have made them play their match at 6pm on the sunday..bloody madness. So, blame the FA, but don't blame Liverpool for wanting to remember their dead.
Bradford's only game on May 11th since the fire (11/5/85) was at home and only 6 years after it. Would this be a topic for discussion if it was felt by Liverpool fans that they'd had satisfactory answers over what happened? There is also the argument that they died going to see the team they supported, so why not play on that day and try to win for them?
I don't believe Liverpool should have any say as to when they will or will not play games - where does it end? Munich, Bradford, Ibrox - I don't see these clubs demanding games to be changed. When will Liverpool also remember the dead of Juventus? It's just more of the victim/blame culture that scousers perpetuate...
Time to sit down soon and have a glass or two. Managed to buy birthday pressie for D-I-L via the internet. Removed radio from Mme's car to get number so that we could get the code that has always been missing. She seems quite happy now that she can listen to her type of programme when she is out and about. Been to get bread from town, cabbage from veggie plot and have that ground all cleared and weeded ready to start again. Not sure how I managed to find the time to go to work.
That's great news French From good news to fun news, I see Martin Allen has rejoined Barnet. Meanwhile Lawrie Sanchez, who publicly complained a few months ago that he wasn't considered to be in the race to become Northern Ireland manager, has accused the club of a lack of loyalty.
My overriding memory of the shameful episode is the sight of a Juventus fan standing on the terracing near the barrier that separated the two sets of fans, pointing and firing a handgun through the barrier at the Liverpool fans. Most Aussie papers carried the story and picture on the front page & tv news showed video footage of it - that muddied the waters somewhat in trying to determine who was at fault for the tragedy. A footballing friend - a scouser who had played for Everton - irrationally copped some flak over it from a group of Italians who knew him to be a Liverpudlian. They backed off only when someone produced a newspaper with that picture. But that aside, I think you're correct - they don't have the right to have their games postponed simply because they want to. Jsybarry's right, the club and fans should use the opportunity to play in memory of the dead - much more fitting IMO.
According the the Chairman of Liverpool at the time, Chelsea fans and the stadium were to blame for the deaths of the Juventus fans....as were the Greek Police and stadium officials when Liverpool tried to get into the Champions League final with no tickets again..... Arsenal are getting a battering - if it means The Steptoe's getting dragged down, then that's fine for me.
Well played Wigan tonight they played as if their lives depended on it If only they had played this way earlier in the season they wouldn't be in this mess
