whould it be possible to have qualifyers through out the year two races of 20/25 horses then the final (the grand national) will be 20

this will firstly let everyone see which horses can cope with the fences and reduces the numbers and gives people more races???

just a suggestion and im not sure if it could work???

Where has the row gone? Fair enough it's been removed. Feel sickened anyway, for all sorts of reasons, like all of you I expect. Dont want to watch any news or go out or look at stupid twatter.

Terrible news..Like many I thought this was one of the most exciting nationals ever, tremendous finish and Katie Walsh nearly winning. But then 20 minutes later ,we find out about Synchronised and Pete and Weird al fighting for his life. A very dark day for the sport and the high profile of Synchronised will generate awful headlines. I have loved the National for years but when one analyses it you have to say that the price that has been paid is too high. I really don't know if they can carry on after this. AP and connections will get terrible stick which they don't deserve but rather than neuter the race even more it may well be time to call it a day . Very sad about Frankel too but at least he will have the consolation of a pampered life at stud. An awful day..feel absolutely gutted for all connections involved and for the sport

I guess you're right George but if you cut it down it's a different race, and you'll definitely still have a casualty sooner or later and then what, down to 20, 15, 10. People who hate racing, for real reasons and for bullshit reasons, will never be satisfied. Most people who dislike it just do it cos they hate other people's fun, especially that associated with posh people and poor people.

Apparently Aintree are due to issue a statment shortly

I thought I had seen Synchronised jump the Foinavon riderless after he fell at Bechers, but maybe I am mistaken...

Ste I was reading about that - terrible news was only a young lad. Nick his last rolo <laugh> love it

Wayward I asked a question in the nicest possible way

Btw is everyone really buying the Frankel injury ? just a quick question to see what you all think.

First it was just a little cut now he is retired ? maybe not sparkling on the gallops

is there anything wrong with that

as for the statement about the two horses - it was unconfirmed that any had died at the time and those were the only two names going around.

That's the sport. 2 fatalities in the race is the price that's paid for the drama, the danger, and the thrills. Personally I don't think it's too high, others will think differently. But it's surely worth remembering that 2 horses died in the one flat race on tapeta in Dubai recently. You can't race horses without putting them at risk, and we live in a risk-averse society. But every life is at risk, every day. Commiserations to connections.

I've just braved the twitter trend #banhorseracing and I have to say i am incredibly encouraged by the amount of tweets on it that are pointing out the ludicrousness and hypocrisy of it.

You would never get the winner of this years Derby running in a handicap because of the sheer sentiment of a race. Sentiment is purely imagined whilst the fact of the race is simply what it is, a long distance handicap, which just happens to be crowded with too many horses that can't help falling in front of each other and has fences of which horses do not encounter nowadays on any other course. I feel so sad at the moment, i hope we at least get some good news on weird Al.

Fair enough wayward, there's a fair element of hypocrisy in a statement like that on an internet forum tho.
