Derry, who had hoped the FA would rescind his suspension due to a refereeing error on the grounds that Young was offside, blasted the verdict as "ridiculous" and added: "I don't know what they do at the FA but it's not working." Derry missed his side's defeat of Swansea on Wednesday night and revealed the club had been so confident his card would be overturned he had trained as part of Mark Hughes' selected team. Derry told the club's official call-in: "I thought it was a foregone conclusion that it would be overturned and I would be available for last night. Everyone thought the FA would put it to bed that way. "I lined up in the training session to play, then I got a call from our assistant manager, Mark Bowen, who said it had been turned down and I was absolutely gobsmacked. To miss out on the next game is ridiculous really." After the incident on Sunday, in which none of the officials noticed that Young was in an offside position, Rangers' manager, Mark Hughes, admitted his side were "losing faith in referees". Hughes' mood will not be improved by the FA's response, with Derry adding: "The email we got back from the FA was one line telling me my appeal had not been successful. "That's as far as the email went: there was no explanation as to why it was not overturned or even any indication of why I got sent off in the first place. The whole scenario is quite bizarre really. "It was the single highlight of my career to lead a Premier League side out at Old Trafford perhaps the pinnacle of my career. So I was bitterly disappointed to say the least. I don't care how often the game is stopped ( It will add to the tension IMO ) or for how long ( It usually takes seconds, we knew what had happened regarding Shaun Derry before he reached the halfway line. ) all I want to see is the correct decision. If that was applied this season we would be seven points better off than we are now and speculating on our squad for next season instead of posting on here whilst ****ting ourselves.
Thats what FIFA dont want, theyd rather "no delay" and the decision being wrong and taking longer than a replay would than spending 10 seconds looking at a replay. I was watching the NHL last night and there was a question of if the goalie saved it after the puck went in, it took 10 seconds to decide he hadnt and the game continued with everyone knowing the right call was made.
We should follow cricket with a decision referral system. Each team has 1 per half able to refer significant events e.g offside leading to goal or not and ball crossing line. If you refer and correct then you retain the referral. The fact you lose it stops spurious referrals and very close decisions. In essence it stops the howlers that really upset people. By limiting numbers you retain flow but have the occasional excitement of a referral. Everybody wins!
