Doubt we`ll be sat in 3rd come last game of the season, the Goons should have that sewn up.... we may need to win to secure 4th however (if we`re lucky).

Robinson became a total liability for any shot from distance, which didn't work out too well when we weren't closing people down with any real zeal.
Loved his banter with the fans, but his weight and what seemed to be dodgy eyesight detracted from his reactions saves and relationship with the crowd.
I lost track of the number of games that we lost to someone hitting a hopeful rangefinder and having it flash past him.

Maybe not world class and maybe gets beaten from long range too often but still better than Gomes who arrived for around £8m-£9m, we sold Robbo for around £3m. Great business that!

jol has won me over, it took time because we would go 1 step forward then 2 back, we are now playing well in 90 mins, instead of 45,like most of the season, so we are sitting in 9th without setting the world on fire, but he knows when to play players in form, and now he has put hughes back with hangeland instead of senderos, and now he is trying some youngsters out, so its all good from me, and we have only lost 1 london derby this season, and that was the daylight robbery you did to us, when a draw was fair, i am looking forward to the spursvffc game

    Thanks for your reply <ok>

Good to hear you guys like him. He's a good guy who deserved better treatment than we gave him and he certainly deserves another chance at managing in the PL. I hope it works out for him and your club.

Yeah, like Gomes he was a great shot stopper but once the weakness was spotted teams targetted him from range, particularly with low shots as he could be slow to get down at times when he either wasn't expecting or wasn't concerned about a player shooting. Towards the end he started doing some bizzare things like guessing which side a freekick was going to be hit, like it was a penalty.

Since then he's built up some great form with Blackburn but I don't think for a second that would've been possible if he'd stayed with us. It was the right time for him to leave and I think helped preserve his reputation with the fans.

Honestly, I agree with selling him - he was constantly caught out with long-range shots, he was weak on crosses, and his distribution could be summed up in two words: "Hoof it."

Paul Robinson's cult hero status with Spurs fans is in the main down to two factors. Firstly, he signed a long term contract with us in the days when we were cack and going nowhere. His commitment to what was almost a lost cause was seen as highly commendable by almost everyone. Secondly, his performances in his early days at the club, were well worthy of his "England's Number One" title.

There can be no doubt his performances went rapidly downhill after the Gary Neville backpass incident. In my view he has never been the same keeper since. Personally, I did feel his performances had dipped prior to that game, but that incident was most certainly a catylist.

He had already become complacent in his attitude to training. The keeper coach in those days was Hans Segers, who was also a lazy worker. As time developed, Robbo began to abuse Segers' good nature and so it bacame known at the training ground, that if Robbo wanted an easy day, then Segers would let him have one. And so, Robbo who had always had a weight problem, began to put on more weight and so his performances dipped even further, so much so that with every long range shot, he struggled to lift himself off the ground.

There is a phrase in goalkeeping which is called the "falling tree syndrome". This is where if you imagine a tree falling after it has been chopped down, then this is what some keepers do rather than diving to save a shot. if you fall like the chopped tree, then you gain no length in your fall. This was a habit that Robbo fell into.

I wasn't convinced we were right in selling him when we did. Story has it that wehn he drove out of WHL for the last time, he had to stop his car on the Tottenham High Road as he was crying so much. But with the knowledge of his circumstances that I now know, I can see we were correct.

He remains a top bloke and seems to thoroughly relish his returns to the Lane, and I will, as always give him the good welcome he back he desrves in a few weeks time.

"Hoof it" does the guy a disservice. His distribution, even now, is second to none. There have been at least two managers this season, who have come out and mentioned Robinson's excellent distribution.

I've never heard it put like that before, but that's a spot on description of what he used to do.
He'd dive, but it was virtually on the spot.

I hope that he's always remembered fondly though, as he was one of the few modern players that got it.
How often have you seen someone do something like this?

I think that's a misconception down to the distance he got on it but he always seemed to get it within about a 5 yard radius of Berbatov's forehead from his kicks. That said, do you remember in the Germany 06 World Cup when he booted it so high that it hit the jumbotron that was haning over the middle of the pitch? :D

Other than the goal, which I'm sure everyone can remember, I can distinctly recall him getting a couple of assists.
His range is enormous, but it was largely wasted because none of our strikers could head a ball.
I just hope he never goes to Stoke. Route 1 would be putting it mildly.

Yeah, he did. There's a couple of articles mentioning it on Google but I can't find a picture of it, as I remember it was out of camera shot and you just saw him launch the ball up field and it landed back in our half. Here's what he hit though:

I bet he meant to do it too :D
