**** yeez...part quatre , my final word on this vexing matter, maybe
No. But I do think they were better songwriters, more relevant and not aimed at wee girls. In my opinion, the Police are of absolutely no cultural relevance whatsoever. Name one other band who cite the Police as an influence. People can **** their instrument and say nothing with it - and I haven't even started on people that like the Police but hate the black music they ripped the soul out of. I'm aware that the Jam had quite a lot of soul in their influences but they actually retained some of the spirit of the music that influenced them. The Police weren't even as culturally significant as the other "white rastas" like UB40 and they were the worst band ever conceived. I hate the Police. I ****ing hate Sting. I have a bit of time for Andy Summers as he was one of the trailblazers of effects-led lead playing but, Christ, read some early reviews of them and their haircuts were deemed more important than any particular sound they were trying to create.
I can almost fathom some people not liking the Jam, but to say the Police were better than them is a ****ing abomination . I do agree it is all a matter of opinion but the Jam told it how it was about real life while the police sang about ****ing prostitutes and soppy love songs.
The fact is though that Weller is as much a self infatuated prick as Stingio and Bonio and all are irrelevant in a musical and lyrical sense. Arseholes who fancy themselves and thing the sun shines out their arses. Much like Bowie in fact and Morrissey and well the list is endless. Compared to classical music pop/rock is muzak. All of it.
I could name a ****load of bands who were influnenced by the Police but for the sake of brevity I will name only the ones who may come as a surprise. Pearl Jam Primus Rush Incubus When Sting went solo, did he round up a bunch of half assed no names to back him, as was the case with Weller or did he build a team of world class (that's not even a debate) musicians around him? The Police are like marmite, you either loathe them or love them, and it seems a lot of people really loathe them and are simply judging them on their singles output. The "Deep cuts" on the albums and B sides are my favourites, as a Live band they are regarded as one of the best, having seen them myself live 4 years ago I can confirm that they would blow most bands off the stage.
If you want to be petty have a look at who sold the most records, the Police or the Jam, it's not even a close contest.
That doesn't matter to me, this Bieber **** has probably sold a lot more than The Strokes - I still know who's better! It just means a million more people are ****ing idiots!
No I'm not. What I said is 100% correct. Arseholes all that I have listed. Huge Cornball is another one with a self infatuated ego who thought he could turn to acting at one fell swoop. Most of these rock stars are arrogant pretentious ****ers. Neil Young is another.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Police_Reunion_Tour The Police Reunion Tour was a 2007–2008 worldwide concert tour by The Police, marking the 30th anniversary of their beginnings. At its conclusion, the tour became the third highest grossing tour of all time, with revenues reaching over $340 million. The tour began in May 2007 to overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and critics alike and ended in August 2008 with a final show at Madison Square Garden. How would the Jam do if they reformed? Are they not in fact back on the road sans Weller just now? Are people battering the doors down to see them?
