I ,somewhat bizzarly , once played a gig with "guitar george - he knows all the chords " of "sultans of swing" fame ; what a very odd man , nice , but very odd. I think he should be on here He kept trying to feed everyone boiled sweets , which felt slightly sinister though.
The most easily identifiable intro riff is Peaches with the wonderful JJ Burnel. Three notes, that's all. Not saying he is the best bassist (i leave that to musical bores) but quite possibly one of the most influential bassists wherby the bass became the lead. If you don't believe me try listening to the album "Black and White".
The point of a riff is that it's recognisable. Perhaps you mean popularity? Or that old chestnut, credibility? I like Zep's Custard Pie, Girls Aloud's Love Machine, AC DC's Riff Raff, Thin Lizzy's Cowboy Song and Matt Willis' Up All Night. I hate pretentious rock snobbery. Ain't no credibility in writing a riff.
I love ****ing furiously to Teenage Kicks for that is what it's about. Doesn't matter where I am as soon as I hear the tune my cock is out and getting bashed mercilessly. Got me into a few scrapes in the lifts of certain department stores.
I was gonna do a list of the definative riff of each decade ; 50s, 60s, 70s( which is a special case where you get a pre-punk and punk riff), 80s , 90s and 00s ;but I couldnt be bothered ; can someone else do it and then I`ll provide appropriate feedback.Thanks.
50s: Duane Eddy - Peter Gunn 60s: Kinks - You Really Got Me 70s: David Bowie - Gene Genie (Mick Ronson) 80s, 90s, 00s - Who the **** cares?
Much more famous ones bybands/people you mentioned: Led Zep: Stairway, Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love, in fact, now I think of it, almost every Zep song. RHCP: Under The Bridge, Scar Tissue, Californication Lynyrd Skynyrd: Sweet Home Alabama As for Jet, that's not an instantly recognisable riff at all, there are a number of songs that I have to wait to kick in to identify it as something different (can't remember exacxtly who it was). And a few more: GnR: Paradise City, Welcome To The Jungle Slayer: Reign In Blood Metallica: One, Nothing Else Matters, Master Of Puppets Oasis: Don't Look Back In Anger, Wonderwall, Ciggarettes And Alcohol Can't think of any more at the mo, but will come back to it later.
