Just a yes or no answer really, do you think hessenthaler should be given another season, after surely failing again this year after that loss. Particularly interested to hear from anyone who still actually trusts in him.
I think hess has had 2 good goes at it and should probably move on. Who would come in I really don't know
Probably never good answering questions like this when coming straight back from a losing game. Also I cannot just give a straight yes or no answer without giving some justification for the response, therefore...
I would love to see him succeed and believe managers should be given enough time. But this in my mind has been offset by the level of investment and now two failures. I am not enjoying watching footy at the moment....not just because we lose the odd game but because of the frustration that we should be challenging near the top three. We are not really challenging for the top seven and IMO it will only get harder the longer we stay in this league and the manager has to be to blame for this. There is still a small chance this season but anything less than three points next week should signal a change in management.
No Respect Hessenthaler but he's failed to deliver with better than League 2 players and a budget that wouldn't be seen out of place for a mid-table League 1 side. Our inconsistency and our inability to get points when we've needed to get them will keep happening with football and tactics that we've had since he's been back. Need a clearout in the summer including back room staff and build the team around Gazza, Essam, Lee, Whelpdale, Payne if he's still here and Birchall
I think Evans should be included in the team, it pisses me off that someone with so much talent is not getting played.
Hessy had three things to do when he was appointed. 1 Build a squad capable of getting promoted and staying up. 2 Start winning away. 3 Get promotion (which will follow if he has achieved 1 but it could take 2 or 3 seasons). The reason for non achievement of 3 has been simply non availability of players, and Hessy must take some blame for this. You just do not have a suitable squad if the players are not going to be available for 40 games a year and you only have to look at their career histories to know that there are half a dozen who will run up yellow cards and pick up injuries season after season. These people must go even though a number of the culprits are crowd favourites. But Hessy must stay. Firstly it is a huge waste of money to pay off a manager. Secondly there are no stand out successors more likely to succeed. Thirdly Hessy is not completely stupid and is much more likely to be successful having had the experience of the last two years. He is close to success and if he can dump the sicknote gang and achieve a modest improvement in home wins then Gills will walk it to auto promotion.
No, blown our budget when lets be honest one of our mums could of managed Gills and got us up this season. Teams like Torquay and Oxford have managed with about half the budget/squad that Hessy has got. Please, please, please don't start droning on about injuries and making excuses, time to move on. Annoyed From Kent
Again I hear the talk of "with the budget he's had" yet knowone can ever tell me what that budget is. People complained they wanted 4 4 2 and that's exactly what we played today. (sack the fans) Stability after years of relegation is enough for now, I'll vote for another year of Hess.
I can't help but think of the similarities to the Peacock era, which was one of promotion near misses, high scoring games and inconsistency. Those of us of a certain age will recall that following his sacking (which for the benefit of younger fans came during the season after losing the very first play-off final against the Swine and just a few months after winning successive home games 8-1 and 10-0) there came probably the worst period of football and closest shaves with the Conference since we were re-elected to the football league. So I suppose what I'm saying here is be careful what you wish for as things could be a whole lot worse than we've experienced in the last couple of years. The most successful English teams of the last 40 years, Liverpool and Man Utd were built on stability. Don't get me wrong, Hess is no Shankley, Paisley or Ferguson, but in my view we have a better chance of going forward with him at the helm than starting another period of transformation.
Ah....Grumpy and the time lord......two voices of reason. The last thing we need is a knee jerk reaction and someone like Jepson, Cooper or even Stimson coming in which would set us back another couple of seasons. AND before you go on about Stimson getting us up......yes he did out of a very weak League Two....but could he keep us up? No and the worst away run in footballing history for us. Risk that....no way. Better the devil you know....and let him keep re building the team. Some of us have long memories........
League 2 is a very weak league at the best of times. Stimson at least managed to get this side out of League 2 and is something Hess hasn't been able to do twice. That's what it comes down to!
Agreed there is a reason teams are in league 2 (like us, we couldn't win away) we should of been promoted. Think Mr.Scally has lost patience with Hess after two years of anything less than promotion is a failure
During my 55 years of supporting Gills, many in league 2 (4th level) I don't think the league is any weaker now than it has ever been, I do think the expectations have changed since we had a brief fling with the Championship. Leeds are a big club and should be in the Premiership, never thought Gills fans would ever start sounding like Leeds fans.
Historically this is our level and things looked very bleak back in the 90's so things could be worse. The problem is that the longer we stay in this league, there is more chance of becoming like Bradford, Vale, Rotherham and being stuck for the next 5 years where the better players move on. I believe we can be an established League 1 club with the results in the FA Cup against Bournemouth and Orient and despite our bad away record back in 09/10, we were only 1 point off of surviving with a weaker squad on paper.
