i think the public sector is bound to take a hit whoever gets in, running with the deficit that we have we cant keep spending the amount we are. i really dont believe we're going to do half of it with "efficiency savings", i mean how many post it notes are the NHS using

i dont think we do, there's no real threat of nuclear war and even if there was russia/china/usa would've destroyed the whole planet long before we could do any damage. if you wasnt a nuclear threat go for smaller cruise missle delivered nukes as they can be fired by conventional submarines (trident boats cant fire cruise missles so were useless when we invaded iraq etc). we can bin trident and retain a nuclear threat which will be diminished but cheaper

personally i'd just bin them altogether but politically thats unpopular as it would mean the UK would lose its permament seat on the UN security council

 

the UK should be like Switzerland and just spend all day rolling about in it's own filthy wealth instead of spending a fortune trying to act like the little weedy hard man that hangs around with the 6 foot school bully.

this probably wont go down well but i think that as a wealthy nation we've got a responsibility to intervene in situations whether it be through aid, granting asylum or sending troops. the last decade hasnt done much for my argument but we did the right thing sending troops into sierra leone and the balkans (although we didnt do enough there).

 

I agree 100% LR. Some folk don't know what they've got. Most ****s can't see past their own front door. They should go into the world and see how some of these poor ****s live, ****ing appalling conditions. It's a bit hypocritical to moan about giving some of my money up for these people when the Western world has raped the **** out of them for five centuries. I don't mind giving something up seeing as a lot of our current wealth is based upon the exploitation of these peoples.

Bit hard to be cold-hearted about aid when you've had starving kids begging you for cash, or seen them eating rubbish out of bins....that was my last trip to the East End of Glasgow. **** knows what Africa is like.....


Really though, in Mexico and Africa it's a sin seeing how they live when you're carrying a years wage to them about in your pocket in the form of an iPod or mobile phone. I gave some boy at the hotel $20 that I had left in my wallet from my last trip to America and he hugged me. I thought nothing of it until someone told me that was about 2 months wages for the ****. £12 he earns in two months! I earn more than that in half and hour! The world isn't fair and I don't mind shelling out to make it that tiny little bit fairer. Neither should any other **** in the Western world.

 

There is no need to pretend to be a world power anymore, Germany has been Militarily emasculated for 60 years and it's the strongest economy in Europe with a higher standard of living than the UK - and it manages to give aid and support to those who need it (and to the jews) .

yes , sometimes you need to get a grip , I was travelling in northern africa a good fiew years ago now and remember well my mate trying to barter down the price of some stuff he was buying off a street trader.....it was embarrassing ; he was haggling over what was peanuts to him and a fat bonus to the trader....I refuse to get into that .

what exactly is a world power? i think in the most dire of circumstances, and if we can do it relatively easily, richer countries should intervene militarily if needs be in places like the sudan when there are instances of gross human rights violations and terrible suffering. intervening in sierra leone probably saved the country from going the same way as somalia, in the balkans enough wasnt done to protect people and nato and the un were seen as a soft touch and generally ignored.
