Morning and a very happy Easter to one and all....Little Miss W_Y is back home safe and sound, so all is right down in bandit country. We have friends around for Sunday Lunch, their son is in Afghan and has just flown out to Helmand, so they are a bit edgy to say the least...right, need to start on a Rhubarb & Apple crumble for pud...

Happy Easter all - lazy day here with 3 of the five kids here plus two boys in law and one granddaughter :) Roast lamb from the farm opposite for dinner with a Christmas pudding to follow - our tradition is always to make two and eat one at Christmas and one at Easter

An unusual way of referring to your son - your daughter's brother?

Not a good day for me today - after struggling all week with asthma, I had a coughing fit whilst drying myself in the shower this morning, tweaked a muscle in my back and can now barely walk<grr>

    2-3 days in bed I suspect :(

morning all, sorry to hear about your back BB, hope it eases soon :((

Happy Easter to those who celebrate :)

My two big passover nights are all done now, so i can sit back and relax a bit. Off to work after heading to my mum to sort out her new telly, and then taking the kids to see the Hunger Games, should be a good day :)

    See you laters, taters

Morning all. Its good to be back, but the week away did me the world of good. No mum on my back, no little brother to pester me, no sister to drive here there and everywhere. It was nice and calm and relaxed.

From The Sun - "Roberto Mancini insists he must splash the cash again this summer - despite spending £210million in two years "

    Unbelievable.:(

Dan - as the resident refereeing expert, can you explain the difference to me between these two goals from yesterday?

    1) Soton vs Pompey - Billy Sharp, received the ball in an offside position, pass to him deflected off a defender, scored and goal stood;

    2) Reading vs Weeds - Adam Le Fondre, received the ball in an offside position, pass to him deflected off a defender, scored but disallowed.

I thought the 'played on' rule had been scrapped when the offside rules changed - after yesterday I still don't know whether it has or hasn't.:(

Or is it simply down to more incompetent refereeing by one or the other of the refs involved?

BB, I suspect that the difference is that Sharp scored from a corner which deflected off a defender - you cannot be offside from a corner unless the ball is played forward by one of your own side after the corner is taken, which it was not.

In ALF's case, he was deemed to be offside at the moment the original ball was played - by a member of his own side - before it was deflected off the defender.

    Hope this helps.....

    The rule is as follows.

Taken from the 11/12 edition of rules of the game issued to all officials and team. This is the bible and the law!

It is difficult to see if the Sharp goal was a good one as he could have been onside when the corner was taken. But as Vic and the rules say you cant be off directly from a corner. As far as i know the deflection does not change it. If player Z is offside when player A plays the ball through to player B but the ball deflects to player Z then the official should signal offside. The player is active and interfering with play and therefore offside. Neither goal should count. But there were some poor decisions in the South Coast derby.
Lallana should have been booked for diving in the 2nd half. Ashdown did not touch him and he went down like he was shot being one of them.

Will have to fire up the highlights again - I thought the corner was played to the edge of the box from where it was headed on towards goal by a Soton player, off the back/head of a Pompey defender, which would surely mean a similar scenario to the Reading non-goal?

The ball was headed on. But you cannot be offside when an opposition player plays the ball. Only when your player does. Its sooooo bloody confusing from set pieces.

Just watched it again - the corner was definitely headed on from outside the edge of the 6 yard box to Sharp who was in an offside position, so I still can't see why it was allowed & Le Fondre's wasn't.

So Le Fondre's goal should have stood? Does the term 'play the ball' also take into account deflections - in both cases the ball was deflected off a defender?

Two different decisions from apparently similar incidents - both of which favoured Soton really.

Both incidents seem exactly the same. If the ball was flicked on by an opposition player then its a good goal as the ball must be played by a player on your team. If the defender flicks it on then its a good goal it is would be considered as direct from a corner.

Am still confused - in both cases the pass to the goal scorer was made by a player from his own team, and when the pass was made the scorer was in an offside position. Both passes deflected off a defender, yet one goal stood and the other didn't.

I can't even find a link to the rules of the game where this scenario is mentioned.:(

The issue i have is i cannot see if Sharp is actually offside when the corner is taken. There are two defenders at the near post one or both of them could be playing him onside and that would be why the goal stood. But ALF was certainly nearer the goal when the ball was played from the corner. However, you cannot be offside directly from a corner and a deflection would have to come off your own player to put you in an offside position.

I wouldn't have thought that relevant - the corner wasn't played to him, it was played to another Saints player who headed it on to him - the pass that counts- by which time he was definitely offside.

Bloody confusing rule <grr> I still wonder about that goal we had disallowed at Stoke in the 0-0 draw a couple of years back. Can't remember who took the corner - think it was Eustace - but it was played short to AM who put his foot on the ball. Eustace then ran up and crossed to Williamson who put it in the net, but Eustace was given offside. Quite how he was offside when Stoke had two defenders on the post I'll never know.
