I not sure if it still open not been down there for few years now my best mates mum used to work there gave me cheaper prices haha
i have a place (that is place not Plaice) just around the corner from the chippy. its the one on saddleworth road opposite chariots take-away. a very small unit where they still cut the chips and peel em on a machine in the back. what ever you do, dont ask for scraps. you have to ask for bits. and if you want a sausage, remember to ask for it in batter, otherwise you ll get it without. the fish is always skinned as well unless you ask and they have no idea what a patty is the one on the main drag on stainland road is crap by the way!!!
One in Market Weighton (not Harpers) it's on Market Place, near the Giant Bradley statue. Consistently the best Fish and Chips around, Wetherby Whaler in Wetherby if we're off upto Harrogate to see the in laws!
I think the Magpie at Whitby is overrated. Whiteheads at Hornsea is excellent. Frydays (?) in Anlaby is very good too. For those poor souls who are exiled in the west of Yorkshire there are one or two good chippies in Leeds - my favourite there is Bretts in Headingly - much used by cricketers and journalists, it has a comments book signed by such people as Richie Benaud, John Arlott, Geoff Boycott etc., however, despite catering for well known southerners, it does stay true to good Yorkshire traditions and does not serve Cod, only the very finest Haddock.
used to be a place on woodhouse moor opposite hyde park library that was the best in leeds but its long since gone. also a great in halton next to the travs. sadly the travs is no more than a brand new tesco now and the chippy is long gone
Fish chips and a patty from Hedon chippy after the rugby with a tin of d&b, perfect Friday afternoon!
is Bryan's or Brian's? Just up the road from Brett's and does have a good reputation but I've never actually been there - friends compare it with The Mermaid at Morley which always reminds me of our old local favourite, the Gainsborough. Fish, chips, peas, tea and two colours of bread for 2/6d....yum! I also loved Gainsborough's fish cakes.
As a regular end to end traveller of the M62 I find fish and chips generally get better as you travel from west to east. Liverpool is crap; Manchester an improvement; Leeds decent and Hull the best! However, everyone on the west side of the Pennines cringes when I say fish skin should be left on.
i also went to that one in brid (149 i think) and what a pile of **** it was i gave most of mine to to the ****e hawks, and i had gut whack for days, defo agree with cave street though its been excellent for years
best one near me (denby dale) is the cleverly worded Y-Pas. fantastic fish and chips and proper (dull) mushy peas. the clincher however is that it's just enough away for me to sneak in a spam fritter butty on the one handed drive home. the fit-as chip shop girl in there is a delight too, i think my gluttony and excess are drawing her to me.
Ask the miserable grey haired fatso in Cave Street for beans and see what reaction you get. What a happy bastard he is. For me it's gone right down hill in there anyway, they even sell dodgy Vietnamese fish which tastes like arse and gives you gut rot. The new one on Bev Rd called The Strand is good but the lass who works there is a bit of a rem and always cocks your order up. Good tucker though.
Best one is Hornsea - Whiteheads In Hull Cave Street used to be good but have been told its changed owners?.....All Electric on Bev High Road is ok!
