From the mirror...

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is ready to sign Barnsley midfield starlet Jacob Butterfield in a shock deal worth up to £2 milllion.

Butterfield, just 21, was skipper of the Championship side before he picked up a serious injury - and the Toon spotted his potential and have teed up the move.

The young Yorkshireman has been a first-teamer at Oakwell for three seasons but has refused to sign a new contract and the clubs are working on the fee.

Butterfield is a ‘free agent’ in the summer but Newcastle will have to pay for him because of his age. They will also try to avoid a tribunal by sorting out proper compensation.

Sources close to Butterfield revealed the move was on last night and that Barnsley will let him head for Tyneside to discuss terms and have a medical.

Butterfield tore his anterior cruciate ligament at the start of the year but should be playing at the beginning of next season, with Newcastle prepared to take up his rehab programme.

Pardew is keen to strengthen his squad and recruit in midfield where he is short on numbers, with Butterfield one of several ‘bargains’ in the radar.

Most striking, perhaps, was the fact it was difficult to decipher which was Butterfield’s strongest foot. He took corners and free-kicks not with a favoured foot, but with whichever boot was most appropriate for the situation. It might say more about football in this country than it does about Butterfield that this was so startling.

    (...)

Today, he’s the Tykes’ talisman. He’s the heartbeat of Barnsley and Keith Hill’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system is suiting him perfectly. Butterfield is effective playing just behind lone striker, but looks most at home as a deep-lying playmaker, when coupled with the likes of Nathan Doyle or David Perkins – tenacious and energetic types.

Butterfield relishes the role of taking the ball off his centre-backs, getting Barnsley’s short passing game going and forcing back opponents as he progresses through their territory.

With those traits, combined with his quality from set pieces, he is becoming an increasingly influential force in the Championship.

A distinct possibility, from what I've heard about Ambrose.

Well apart from certain anatomical constraints <laugh>

Our current first 11 is littered with cheap 'nobodies' and it's working so where is the problem?

Cabaye 4 million, Tiote 3.5 million, Williamson 800k, Simpson 1.2 million, Perch 2 million. Had you heard of any of these 'nobodies' before they signed?
