<peacedove>Roy supporters claimed that Liverpool supporters never gave him the chance because he was not from the clan.
In away they were right and also they were wrong.
Roy Hodgson's results were bad and was playing too much defensive football, but Liverpool supporters have not given him much chance as they have given their old boy Kenny Dalglish.Who knows may be Hodgson would have taken Liverpool a step downward to the championship.?
Here comes Kenny Dalglish the players and supporters warmed up to him, good and se..ssy football getting results and we started asking ourselves if he had been there from the begining of the season we are going to finish first or second in the premiership.
The honeymoon lasted twelve months, and the honeymoon is over every one
starts to see the other side of the coin.Liverpool current result is the worst for nearly sixty years and if not because we already have enough points not to be relegated-'it is a relegation form'.
Have we judged Roy Hodgson unfairly.?

Roy's attitude was all wrong. Singled out players and never blamed his tactics for defeat. He then blamed the fans. His ego was sky high for no real reason.

He may be having the latest laugh, but not necessarily the last.

To be fair the players wouldn't adopt his tactics - part of what they are paid to do is listen to the manager.

Roy tried to start with the basics but had a squad of players who thought they were above that. That's been Liverpool's problem for too long, they don't perform against the small teams - they only rise on the big stage. To win the title you have to beat Wigan at home and QPR away.

The first thing Roy does with a team is tell them exactly where he wants them to be on the pitch when they dont have the ball. His central midfield and defence are rigid and boring structures - but they are effective. Going forward the players can be more creative, but this is what takes time to develop.

The fans also had a big role in this, putting undue pressure on the team because Hodgson wasn't considered a 'big' enough manager for the mighty reds. This gave the players an excuse when they didn't win and further undermined the managers attempt to introduce the new system.

What the fans seemed to like least about Hodgson was his honesty, not his ego. Roy always tries to manage expectations. He knew he had been brought in because the board wanted a low cost and effective solution to a big problem. It was his ability to operate with a small budget and get the best out of existing players that was part of his appeal. The fans were unwillng to recognise the clubs decline and lowered ambitions - so in comes Kenny and £100m gets spent.

A brave but totally incorrect assessment of Hodgson's time at Liverpool. It was very apparent from the start of this tenure at Anfield that he did not have the capacity to meet the demands of the job. He totally misread the players, the club and the fans. He was in fact the wrong man, in the wrong place, at the wrong time. The damage that he did to the club - his purchases and his poor performance has taken a long time and a great deal of money to even start to put right.

His thinking about the set up of a side is very limited (wherever he manages you can immediately recognise a Hodgson side). He does not have the capacity to evolve his strategy. Neither does he have the ability to make changes during a match (I still remember watching him rub his chin and do NOTHING when it is clear to the whole ground that a change is necessary). When he then compounded that irresolution by blaming everybody but himself for the results that typified the man.

I don't care what Hodgson thinks about our present situation - thank God it has nothing to do with him. I do know that had he still been here we would be in an even worse state.

That's revisionist history at its finest. "The damage that he did to the club" - that is ridiculous, my whole point was that he got the job because the club was damaged - because the board needed the low cost options. Liverpool are still recovering from the damage that Hicks and Gillett caused, this was compounded by the bloated squad that Benitez put together, full of average players on decent wages. What Roy tried to do was work with these players, rather than overhaul the whole team, because the funding wasn't there from the owners. When the new owners did come in it was clear he was losing touch with the fans.

His purchases may not have been great, but then players were hardly lining up to join - during the summer leading up to 10/11 the club was in serious trouble. It took the new owner to solve the situation.

Just because a system is instantly recognisable doesnt mean the manager is limited. He does have the capacity to evolve his strategy, but the simple truth is that his defensive structure is effective, so he will, of course, implement it wherever he goes. You're talking about a guy UEFA use in their coaching videos as an example of best practice. He doesn't make kneejerk subs because when he puts a team out he has faith in its ability to win the game - it might upset the fans but it shows the managers confidence in his players.

show me hodgson's trophy... go on show me.

perspective people, perspective..... hodgson was well on his way to a player revolt and exodus, relegation and being a laughing stock... we did him a favour, he got another job that really he doesn't deserve and he's got the gau lto talk baout england job...

hodgson signed poulsen and others who need no naming. the damage he did was as great as rafa did with jovanoivic and others... all in 6 months... PERSPECTIVE!!!!

and the temerity to say he did no damage and to say he did si revisionist? BOLLOCKS... HAIRY STEAMING GONADS... the damage was done by G&H and others and he compounded it by quite a bit.

the turth is hodgson is a lower league manager with not much ambition to win things but does just enough to get by and survive. thats the truth, a bad appointment all told but he did a smashing job of making a royal mess of it himself.

You are a most myopic little twerp!

The money that LFC have spent is more than matched by the offloading and sales that we have made. Additionally, we have a squad that will now form the basis of a very strong side next year. Now that is something that Hodgson could never have achieved.

That's not fair dribbling! MITO did you the honour of saying that he tried to ignore most WUMs but that your efforts often deserved response.

Yes it should be a forum for mature people. However, we all know that even mature people can go over the top at times - and I don't exclude myself! As for strongly held views, it is just too easy to dismiss them as arrogant or to think that the poster is a know it all. Perhaps just a little even handed questioning can answer your question regarding other posters stance?

Make all the comparisons you like between Hodgson and Kenny. Point is, and this is irrelevent to whether Kenny is the right man or not, Hodgson WASNT the right man.

I preferred to put my weight behind David Ngog and Ryan Babel, who’s never really been given a proper chance at centre-forward at the club. I’m hoping that between now and Christmas we’ll have ample quality to see us through that period.
On not buying another striker

A club like Liverpool shouldn’t have to rely on non-specialists like Dirk Kuyt or Ryan Babel ‘doing a job’ up front when they are primarily wide players.
Hodgson changes his mind a month later.

They’ll be a formidable challenge – there’s no question about that.
On Carling Cup opponents, struggling league Two side Northampton

I thought we did quite well when (Northampton) they took the lead in the extra time and we threw caution to the wind it gave us the equaliser.
Hodgson uses the words ‘throw caution to the wind’ about playing a League Two side. At Anfield.

That was as good as we have played all season….. To get a result here – against Everton – would have been Utopia.
After the loss and pathetic display against Everton

I know Sir Alex (Ferguson) is not really a Liverpool man so I’m a bit concerned about my excellent relationship with him.
I sincerely hope he forgives me for moving north and hopefully we can have a glass of wine together, maybe in secret.
Hodgson endears himself to Liverpool fans everywhere

I prefer to talk about the game and talk about issues that interest me. Mr Ferguson is entitled to any opinion he wants to have but I’m not going to come here and say I agree or disagree.
Hodgson refuses to defend Fernando Torres against accusations of cheating

I’ve been involved in some big derbies in my career and you know how much they mean to the fans…. I didn’t like losing in those games, which I did quite often. I did poorly so it would be nice to change that.
Hodgson shows he’s the man for the big occasion before losing 3-2 to Manchester United.

Are you from Denmark? (No, Norway replied the journalist) Ah, two countries I never want to work in again.
Insulting a Norweigian journalist and a large part of Liverpool’s fan base.

Today was a famous victory
After a 1-0 triumph over Bolton at the Reebok when we were at the bottom of the table.

There aren’t many quality left-backs around in the world, never mind in England – so to find an English one ( Paul Konchesky) who can go straight into the team without any adjustment problems is a big advantage.
Hodgson, who sold Roberto Carlos to Real Madrid while manager of Inter Milan, knows a good left back when he sees one.

He’s not that bad on the ball. After seeing him play.
It is very early for me to make very strong judgements about where his best position is.
Hodgson shows the depth of his research on £11.5m signing Raul Meireles, who has played his entire career in central midfield.

I don’t understand questions about Liverpool and Fulham players being different types
Who said Hodgson doesn’t grasp how big a club Liverpool is?

Fans make their frustrations felt every time we lose, but unfortunately they may have to do that a few more times, because I can’t see us going through a season winning every game.
Roy promises the good times are going to roll again after the 2-0 defeat to Stoke

I don’t know where the stories came from that Gerrard would be fit for Newcastle.
From your Head of Sports Medicine Dr Peter Brukner, Roy.

It’s not as if he’ll be playing with a bunch of also-rans. I’m not asking him to play in the reserves.
Asking Torres to play against Utrecht while also motivating his reserves

I think we will cross that bridge when we come to it…
Issuing a stern hands-off Torres warning to pal Ferguson. Well, kind of.

He’s not so much a player I can really take responsibility for. I’d have to share the responsibility for Joe, less so than for people like [Christian] Poulsen, [Raul] Meireles and [Paul] Konchesky, who are players I was quite happy to bring to the club.
Washing his hands of Joe Cole

Ever since I came here, the famous Anfield support hasn’t really been there. I have to hope the fans will become supporters because we need support.
Roy puts the final nail in his coffin
