Many years ago I had to teach maths to student nursery school teachers in Brixton. They all had a complete block about numbers. After much persuasion I managed to get the head of department to agree to me taking them on a field trip to Calais for the day. She was dubious about the educational merits of going to a hypermarket so she insisted on coming with us. On the train back, at midnight, the head came up to me and said with much surprise," It is late but I have just heard these girls (it was the early 80s) converting Francs into pounds and kilos into pounds in their heads so that they can see the extent of their bargains. They can't do this in class when they are sober." Nearly everyone can do arithmatic if there is some point to it and they are taught properly. Calculus is a different matter!
okay, you very clever people..it's time for bed. See you tomorrow. I'm on a training course all day. Well, not quite training. I'm off to visit Cardington. The Examiners' training centre is there. I'm finally going to find out how they make their dodgy decisions . See you tomorrow evening. Have a great day nighty night!
Morning all - quite a pleasant morning in West West London. Just a few more days and a nice break - seems that Blackpool is a sell out and they are bringing 1200, so a great turn out by us. H - I forgot the driving instructor place was near Cardington...stay clear of Shortstown though - unlike the name of the village, the locals are not short on teeth or fingers! I suppose it goes with being a bit too familar with their sisters!

Möðudalsöræfi has snow today so winter is not too far away. Car fuel went up again so we are nearly as expensive as England now. My work is getting silly with time again and I may not be able to keep the thread running on Friday. We are supposed to have a holiday for Föstudaginn langi but I think I will be at work, we call it in english the long friday. Monday I will not work but I know not what is planned by Frú Ak.
Morning all lovely morning this morning but Rain again forecast for this after noon. Thanks for the Coffee Ak but still staying off the doughnuts. - In the UK we call the Friday before Easter Sunday Good Friday. There are two possible origins for the name "Good Friday". The first may have come from the Gallican Church in Gaul (modern-day France and Germany). The name "Gute Freitag" is Germanic in origin and literally means "good" or "holy" Friday. The second possibility is a variation on the name "God's Friday," where the word "good" was used to replace the word "God," which was often viewed as too holy to be spoken aloud. We also have Maundy Thursday this week which is to celebrate the last supper (which was when Christ & his Disciples celebrated Passover and Christ instigated the first mass, bread & wine etc.) He was arrested that night and crucified the next day. Good Friday. Anyway I'm off today as the washing machine is leaking and I have been deligated to wait in for the engineer (sorry exact time of call unknown) so I'm calling today Peed Off Wednesday. (At least the crickets on and we seem to be making a fist off it)
Apologies Chas, when you stated "they are 16' round and 4' deep" - I wrongly assumed you meant 16' in circumference, rather like a large beer barrel!
I wouldn't mind that at all if it was full. There was a man found drowned in a Vat of Beer one day. On arriving the police asked if any one saw what happened a bystander said " he was walking on the platform above the Vat slipped and fell in" The Policeman then asked " Did he drown straight away?", "No" replied the bystander "He got out for a piss twice"
Morning all, just off to Cardington (thanks for the warning w_y )...and thanks for the caramel latte Ak Charlie, the timing of Easter is almost perfect this year. Passover almost starts on Maundy Thursday...though, actually the first night is Friday night, so it misses by a day! lol. Lots to do before that, and no time to do it...but i'm still going to the blackpool game, come what may! Right, that's me for the day, see you all later, have a good one! mmmwah!
Long friday is because it is a day of not eating that lasts a long time. This name is very old from before the vÃkingar.
Morning all Some sun some cloud this morning. Cool enough to rake a bit of dead moss out of the lawn...once I've finished listening to the cricket of course...
Morning All, just finished some construction work in the garden so Mme. can get and put in the plants that she bought the other day. I did ask at the time where she was going to put them and was assured that she had just the spot for them. Little did I know that this gave me a trip to buy edging and use of the pick axe to get through the clay and rubble I found when starting. I certainly need my coffee, thanks ak, but can leave her to do her bit while I go and plant my seed potatoes. There seems to be a rumour doing the rounds again that a consortium is trying to buy into, or buy out the club. It is said that Baz is stalling on the outside chance of making the playoffs. One name that has cropped up again is Vialli. I suspect that it is just a rumour and that nothing will come of it. Anyone else heard anything?
I recently (last week) had the chance to pose the following question to Baz: "Are you happy with the club's progress under your stewardship, both on & off the field?" His (partial) response was to the effect that he wasn't happy, that we were three players short of making the play-offs. Tends to suggest that he doesn't rate that outside chance very much!
