I Know he use to play for us and i'm a bit young to have seen him play, a couple of questions i want to ask How good was he for us ? Was he underrated by our fans ? Do you think if Mike Phelan left as the manager's assisant that he would be our the manager's right hand man ?
Not under rated at all. We called him 'square ball ray', due to him generally passing sideways all the time. Good player, was at the top of his game when he went to Milan. The song went 'Ray Wilkins, king of all cockneys', like it did with Gordon Hill before him. Those were the days, I had a junior LMTB season ticket. £30 a season!
Yeah, 1983 replay. Curled one into the top corner in a 4-0 win over Brighton. Last game for us I think, I'm sure he went to Milan that summer.
With the midfield players we had then, I honestly don't know how we blew the league so often. Not even competing most of the time. Bryan Robson, Remi Moses, Wilkins, Arnold Muhren, Steve Coppell. They were all top drawer players. Moses and Coppell got injured though so that didn't help.
Christ, he broke his ankle and dislocated his shoulder about three times each! He was injured a lot, due in no small part to the way he played. Brilliantly, all the time! The injuries that finished Coppell and Moses would be probably curable now. You may not have heard much of Remi Moses but he was a bloody marvelous player.
I've heard of him. I saw clips of Steve Coppell last week before our game against Fulham Gary Neville was comparing him to Antonio Valencia. I'm sure Bryan Robson got injured playing for England once it could've been the world cup in 84.
'86. In Mexico, he went into the tournament with his shoulder pinned and it went during the competition. Similar happened in 1990 too, not his shoulder that time though. Remind you of anything? England desperately taking injured United players to world cups in the hope they will win it for them. Think Beckham and Rooney.
And Beckhams the one before. I'm off to bed Matth. I loved that 80's side, massive underachievers but great memories of FA cup wins when they meant something and some great european nights. It's fair to say things are different now!
I remember being quite excited when we signed him but don't think he ever lived up to his full potential. We used to refer to him as the " Crab " because of his sideways moments and passing, although he did hit the odd beauty ! Have to agree with Ruffian though the eighties was a special era, not much to show in the way of trophies but I have some great memories, especially away trips when Tommy Doc was manager !!
Your memory must be going mate, Docherty was sacked in 1977. Dave Sexton oversaw a load of **** frankly (although Shwan thinks they were ace!) then when big Ron came in the fun began. If he'd got a grip on the players we would have won the league but old bojangles never really had full control over them. Half the squad were piss heads. Sample side from that era, Bailey Duxbury Moran McGrath Albiston Muhren Robson Moses Coppell Whiteside Stapleton A great team, shame they rarely all got to play together.
Your right Ruffian, too much wacky and beer plus watching the boring Chelsea game can do strange with your mind!! Although the eighties were good, the era under the Doc was exciting and me and two mates missed only two away games in three seasons, in an era were United fans were feared all over the country, mostly for the wrong reasons !
I was a nipper then, my first real big memory of United was the build up to and loss of the 76 cup final under Docherty. Then of course winning it the following year. That we denied Liverpool a treble was completely lost on me then.
Ruffian, think I went to 3 finals in the seventies but can only remember beating Liverpool ( Jimmy Greenoff winner ? ) as that was the sweetest !!
