You've not only missed the point, but fired in the opposite direction.
He said EVERY manager needs a bit of luck. He did NOT say that Ferguson's success is simply down to luck, did he? You're the simpleton here if you can't even draw that conclusion from his post.

And being in the job 20+ years, Ferguson will have had more luck than most. Purely by the law of averages. It doesn't necessarily have to be lucky goals or anything on the pitch. He might get a bit of luck in the transfer market, or luck with patient owners. Had he started his United career under Abramovich, he may have been sacked after a couple of seasons.

I feel I'm talking to the wrong person here, but at least I tried.

    Evenin Eric,

If you look again it's not the income stream that I'm commenting upon but the strategic use of that income. It's essentially a product/'process debate linked with the with a market leadership/cyclical decline debate. It has far more to do with organisations in general than it does with football. Now I'm happy to go into that discussion but I think that the majority of posters would find it boring.

As you say, all managers need luck. If you look again at what I wrote, I said "you cannot deny his record". That's not bitter - that's fact. I think that you and NOF are being a little too defensive - perhaps in the same way the we are with Dalgliesh. Let's just say that the comment was meant to reflect that he's had a lot of luck because he's been around so long - the bugger! <laugh>

I'm well, yeah. Very well after last night, whch gives me the confidence to say I think we will win the league. Which, given the very strong assertions from the football world at large and in particular the posters on this board, will be an act of complete genius on Ferguson's part. Not luck. None whatsoever, just simple inspiratation and man management of a group of players deemed average by some (fools).

Commercially, I don't see us failing. The bubble will burst in football but that will happen to all, there will not be a next big think who will take over from us, it ain't going to happen. We weren't invented by sky sports and placed on the planet by them as the one's to watch, we were long in existence and already hugely popular so us, you, Barca and Real will remain the top clubs whatever happens. Always.

As for the bit about this being like Liverpool's fall from the top, surely you must have noticed that this is an evolving side (we always are) and not one left to stagnate and turn to ****, as is what happened at Liverpool. We have a load of youngsters coming through, I don't need to name them. Yes, there are some old timers who will need to be replaced but the pragmantism comes in here, he decided against doing it last time, instead buying width and youth in defence and in goal. Next time he can indeed buy those players we need but in the meantime we should have nicely pocketed another league title.

Poor season in europe admittedly but this happens and something had to give, we are not defined by this and thankfully we made sure our bread and butter was taken care of and the cups, including the CL, are always secondary.

You can dream we're falling apart Dave but it is not happening any time soon.

All managers are lucky by the way. Fergie has that in equal measure, no more no less. The rest is his genius.

I'm going to use numbers and big letters to make this easier for you.

    1. Dipper Dave said Fergie has had more than his fair share of luck. That's MORE than his FAIR SHARE of luck. It's UNFAIR how much luck Fergie has had. Apparently.

    2. Fergie has indeed been in the job for 20+ years. How by the law of averages does that mean that he's had more GOOD luck on average than someone who has been in the job for, say, 20 months? Whilst you work on your response please also consider how the law of averages would have worked with BAD luck.

    3. THANKS.

    Ruffian,

it will happen. It has already happened to you before - remember that little trip to Div2 and just how long it took you to win your next title? That's part of the rhythm of football. Now I'm not going to be churlish enough to say that you haven't won it yet - if you lose it now your side will need kicking! I will say that there is a strong argument that your success owes at least as much to others failure as the play that your side has produced this season.

Please don't start an argument about the quality of youth available to either of our sides as there are other Redmen with far greater knowledge than I who would dearly love to argue that one with you

I was really putting forward an organisational/economic management argument. It wasn't meant as a slight. It certainly wasn't meant as a comparitor to where Liverpool are now. But I do believe that there is a strong likelyhood that it will come true. The sad thing about corporate analysis is that it is mostly reflective. Hence strategy changes when it is too late - bit like fiscal strategy!. Oh well death and taxes hey.

Hope you saw my reply to Eric about Ferguson and luck - hope that answers your point.

Bold statement! I think you can substitute will with might.

I believe I've already answered why that won't happen, when we went down it was with a side FULL of old players living on past glories. Now, however you might like to deny this, this is NOT happening at United, the side is being refreshed on a season by season basis and it won't be too long in the future when Giggs, Scholes and Ferdinand are replaced. The rest of the side is already in place.
Young, Jones, De Gea, Cleverly will (maybe) all gain the experience of winning their first league title and the painfull experience of a bad european season and learn from it.

When Fergie goes, and takes all his luck with him, there will be a period of doubt but we'll have to deal with it. The way the club is now structured, and indeed football is structured, means a repeat of relegation is not going to happen.

    1. Dave never said it was unfair.

    2. He'll have had his share of bad luck too. I never said he hasn't. But the law of averages mean that he'll have have more bad and good luck than any other manager. I mean in total he'll have had more than anyone else. Perhaps 'law of averages' is the wrong term to use, then.

    3. You're welcome.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Of all of the players that you list only De Gea has shown any true signs of improvement. Why did you leave Valencia out?
