We have rain! No carting the watering can around the garden this evening. Who says rain dances don't work?

In Scotland there are two qualifications one for arithmetic (adding, dividing, percentages, etc) and one for maths, I got a 'B' O'level in arithmetic and failed maths miserably could not get and still don't understand why 2=x or x=2. It caused issues when i first joined the RAF as they did not recognise my 'o' level in arithmetic so i had to sit all the basic RAF education tests and they wondered how I always aced them as it was arithmetics not maths<grr>

Just as well I viewed this thread. The yearly inspection on my Blazer is overdue and I had completely forgotten about it.

    Thanks.

Yes, but you needed to calculate r first as Chas quoted the circumference - so a little of transposition was also required...

I passed my O level maths when I was 14...I was rubbish at Junior school, but when I went to my local Secondary Modern it all just clicked into place.

Trouble is now, I have been lined up to tutor Mrs W_Y who has to get the equivalent of GCSE maths to complete her qualified teacher status thingy....she is probably as good as H at maths and I am one of very limited patience, so it's likely to end in divorce or me taking to the bottle or both.....

If the schools taught mathematics properly no one would have a problem.

You earn X government takes Y% but the allowances total is Z how much will you earn in one month.

If you invest ISK100.000 for a period at the standard interest how much will you receive in five years after government interference, unless Mr Brown can take it.

If you buy 250g of meat at X/kg how much can you buy with Y if the meat is the managers special choice with a 25% discount

    Things you need to know.

Exactly AK..I was taught the basics of maths and how to apply them. Do this and it is relatively simple at GCSE level....Little Miss W_Y was struggling and I taught her some simple ways to manipulate numbers and equations (her teacher was not too impressed) and she got a B at GCSE!

Ok - circumference is 2 pie r - which would make the diameter only about 5 feet - wonder if 16' was the diameter

That is very nice. I see it has a snorkel system fitted as well.

Would be totally out of place here though AK - it has snowed just the once in the last 100 years. So those low-pressure tyres would tear up very quickly.

And don't forget about Archimedes - unless, of course, you are happy to waste water. <whistle>

Decisions, decisions - who do we want to win tonight, Burnley or Brum? Don't want Burnley to get within striking distance of us, but don't want Brum to get too far ahead. A draw I suppose. :(

Ah, see i can do simple arithmatic...i wish that had been an option for me. Actually seriously thinking of doing a maths course with a friend of mine who is as hopeless as me. As Master Hornette is doing A Level maths, and Mr H knows a fair bit of maths too, there's no shortage of help, but like you, w_y, they might be a little short on patience, and i really don't 'get' maths at all!

she'd have to be very bad to be as good as me! lol

    That sounds nice ;)

i think Brum...i don't know what the score is, and i'm behind by an hour on the Barca v Milan game..so don't tell me! lol

More misery for the scum - their game at Gateshead tonight called off due to a waterlogged pitch - more congestion on their fixture list. :)
