With the silly season starting to get into flow we will be linked with around 200 players from now till the transfer window closes but with Margaret Bryne's statement last week about the end to huge transfer fee's and staying in our wage structure for the foreseeable with the club looking to fit into the fair play rules is it time to employ better scouts and start picking up some bargains from the rest of europe and beyond.

buying from the prem brings players experience of the league but brings with you a higher wage and a higher transfer fee for a player of similar quality from oversea's.

The best example could be our rivals up the road, they have picked up Tiote, Cabaye, Ben Arfa and Cisse all for the money it cost Liverpool to buy the pretty ordinary Henderson off us for. Like Newcastle or not them four lads are all very good players and would walk into our side.

The downside to buy from abroad is that the player might not settle look at Riveros, if he could display his form he shows for Paraguay for us he certainly wouldn't be out onloan and he would be one of the first names on the team sheet IMO but when it does work out in the cases of Cana, Gyan and now the fantastic Sessegnon for only 6m!! There is deals to be had oversea's.

I aint saying we should put all our eggs into one basket but we seriously need to get our scouts which I sure they are doing taking in plenty of games esp. in the Dutch, Belgium, German and French leagues maybe even the Turkish league as well.

With a good scouting system going abroad is by far the better option. 2 players for the price of 1. Genuinely can't remember the last player we bought from another English team.

    agreed

we have had some good buys as well as you lot esp. from the French League. Sessegnon for 6m now that was a bargain IMO, a player most clubs would love to have, if a club came in for him this summer they would have to pay atleast double what he cost us, personally I would not sell him for any price. Another player Lorik Cana, I personally think he left because promises were not fulfilled to the lad but if he had stayed I think he would of been even better second season around.

Yeah Sess was a great bargain, go for a lot more now.

    Yeah you're right <doh>

But all our main players, HBA, Cisse, Ba, Tiote, Cabaye, Santon all came in for <£10m from abroad.

    Edit: Except Ba, free.

Campbell, Bardsley, Rico, oshea, brown from Man Utd
    Larsson, Gardner - Brum
    cattermole and Bramble - Wigan
    Vaughan - Blackpool
    Turner - Hull
    Killgallon - Sheff Utd
    Wickham - Ipswich

Think we've done alright recruiting domestically but the French league seems packed with gems as does Germany. Think we might see a lot from Italy with serie a deteriorating rapidly.

As for Newcastle where did Simpson, Gosling, Guthrie, Perch, Best, r.Taylor come from?

But so did all your English players. (may not be your main players but they are British)

Cisse was about 10 ish 9-11 anyway. so pretty damn close to 10 miilion.

Collo 2008/09 was 11 million ish

Duff and Martins before that for 14-13 million respectfully.

Those transfers were pre-Graham Carr. The man is a scouting genius. And Cisse was actually only 8m, Carr was on Talksport the other day talking about it. Would have been 15m if we got him in the summer <ok>

We have Brian "pop" Robson now as our chief scout who unearthed Mclean.

So lets hope if that is anything to go by, we will be flying with up and coming talent from all over the place.

    Only time will tell though.

It really is embarrassing when you see how over inflated the cost is. I bet Jordan Rhodes is about 10 million! <yikes>. Gyan and Cisse are many, many leagues above that lad!

Isnt it the "home Grown" players that fetch a premium though.

25 Senior Players but 8 have to be Home Grown (registered with an English/Welsh club for 3 years between their 16th and 21st Birthday)

If you only have 3 Home Grown players then you can only have a senior squad of 20.

that is why we see players in our leagues go for silly money, but players abroad going for a relative pittance.

correct but a club should really have atleast 5 home grown players atleast without going out and signing a player as you always get players that come through your academy Colback for one in our case

Colback last year was just a squad under 21 player, next year he will be classed as an home grown player. (will count towards the 25 man squad)

But look at Liverpool home grown players

    Johnson (Bought)
    Carragah (Youth)
    Gerrard (Youth)
    Caroll (Bought)
    Downing (Bought)
    Spearing (Youth)
    Bellamy (Bought)

    Next year

    Henderson (Bought)

    with 13 other nationalties.

So if they didnt buy the Home Grown players, they did pay OTT for them, they would have had a squad of only 18 players + youth.

I can understand why they are more expensive, the selling club holds out as well for the best deal as well, because for squad depth you need them.
