I pine for the Aussie system - you only need to get a RWC when you sell your car, no matter how old it is.
We didn't used to have MOT's and the number of death traps running around on the roads was horrific. Take your case if not for the MOT you would not know your brake pipes had corroded. Just imagine coming down a steep hill with the family on board and the brakes go, still you would have been a few quid better off without the MOT.
How big are these pools - we have plenty of water in Wales - I should have no problem filling it - I can sit outside in the rain in it
they are 16' round and 4' deep. The only reason you have all the water and we have none is due to poor water management. Even when the Romans were here they had Viaducts to take water from one area to another. we have water companies (many foriegn) that charge the same even if they give a reduced service. There should be a National water network just the same as there is a national Power network.
Theres plenty of water in the network at source, its the leaks that kill it and its been like that for my lifetime even before the privatisations.
In Jersey we don't have an MOT - some of the cars on the island would fail one IMO, but as I can't drive I'm not much of a judge on that. We don't have road tax either but we have to show in our windscreens our insurance vid. It means that the authorities know the car is insured and you don't have to show any other documentation as proof.
That sounds good - wonder how much water that contains though. You are correct about poor water management - it is pathetic that in a tiny country like ours they cannot pipe water from west and north to south and east. They say it will just get worse with global warming - in which case given that we are an island why not invest in desalination plants - they might even help prevent sea levels rising
What an afternoons discussion.... Lenny I am disappointed that you could not calculate the volume in Chas's new pool... It is very difficult, expensive and uses a lot electricity to pump water over long distances...mind you it would be a good infrastructure project that the government could invest it and recharge the water companies to use it! Thanks for the reminder on the MOT - I need to book the ZIL in....
Oh blimey - what is it pie r squared x h or something like that - volume of a cylinder - w-y you are trying to take me back over 40 years - it is for Dan or jerseypie to claculate that for me
Well the forecast rain has just arrived so I'm off out with my buckets & saucepans to save for the pool, who knows after today I might only need another 4,999 gallons.
Good idea - then, asa bonus, we wouldn't have to rely on Germany or Russia for salt supplies for winter roads (or whoever it is that holds us to ransom!) Spot on - I remember teaching that to a cow cocky in Queensland years ago. He didn't believe me at first - until I demonstrated using small containers.
I calculate that the pool will hold 5010 gallons the same as Charlie works it out. So if the average bucket holds 2 gallons there could be quite a few trips to fill it up. My neighbour was given one about that size by someone who wanted something larger. He connected it to his barn roof and filled it in next to no time over one winter. He didn't go for a dip in it that often, but watered his vegtables with it.
He could cut down the number of trips if he followed Tory Francis Maude's advice and foolishly bought a jerry can.
