That is actually hilariously bad grammar, are you trying to be ironic? His use of : was correct, the ; is usually used before descriptive passages or lists, its not used instead of a comma or for examples, you moron.
"And you where there" is a sentence fragment that makes no sense. Better re-check your homework.

More basically, a semi-colon can replace ', because' or ', therefore' or something similar within a sentence.
