I am unashamedly a fan of Waggy for his commitment to the cause, yes he frustrates me when he gets boxed in by the corner flag and his crossing isn't always the best but he holds his own against Danny G who I also think is a good enough player for us. The difference is work rate, commitment and the fact that Waggy always tracks back. He doesn't get "anonymous" and like Kermit commits himself where ever he happens to be on the field if the ball is coming his way. Today probably wasn't one of his best performances but he scored a vital goal to settle nerves after an appalling first seven minutes by the referee. Worthwhile meber of the team and if fit should always be in the squad at the moment.
Waggy may not be the most gifted, but he doesn't deserve to be pilloried. Yet again today he was hacked down(by Mooney of all people!) and nothing done. OK the other time he was poleaxed the guy got booked, but I get the impression refs just don't like him. If Green fulfilled his potential on a regular basis there would be no need for this thread, but unfortunately he doesn't.
Well... Obvioulsy I sparked this whole debate and rat-baiting escapade as a motivational piece to spur Waggy on to the greatness that I have always wanted him to achieve and I'm very glad that it is working. I live and love to see him perform and might even have his face tattooed over mine just so I can feel some of the amazing warmth and adulation that he get just for one day. Sure it will be a downgrade on my own face - I'm even willing to have my ears pinned forward to match his - but it's what is on the inside that counts... And I would rather give off the image of my inside being that of an avant-garde very rich young footballing genius who excites and amazes than a bitter poor equally as young man who isn't Scott Waggstaff. When is the Euro 2012 squad announced?
The poll is 50/50 at the moment, does that mean we should try Wagstaff down the left and Green down the right from the start for once?
Ahhhhhhh......you men,is it now be nice to Waggy week?.........or are you mellowing in your old age?......
It could equally well mean that we start with neither of them, as clearly neither has been convincing enough to sway the vote. As someone who remembers Sir Alf's "Wingless Wonders" as the best England team ever, I have always been suspicious of out-and-out wingers unless they have a name like Jairzinho. So often wingers don't pull their weight in teams. Effective and entertaining when it all clicks, which is usually about one match in ten. I would be happy with Pritchard and Jackson (and, until Jackson is back and fit, we should persevere with Cook. He has played well enough in an inferior team to ours all season). If Pritchard is playing deeper and more centrally than a normal right-winger, this would bring the following benefits: 1) Strengthen our midfield which has been outnumbered and overrun in many matches lately. 2) Push Stephens forward a bit to be more creative and to use his hard shot, as he is a weak link defensively. 3) That in turn means pushing Kermorgant further forward as a more orthodox centre-forward, as clubs have sussed out his present role by this stage of the season and he is no longer as effective, however bravely he battles. BWP could use the extra space on the right-flank more as he is not at his most effective competing against giant centre-backs.
Neither. As I said elsewhere I thought Waggy was poor yesterday apart from his goal. I seem to be a lone voice on that one though. I'd play Green every time despite the frustrations. He's not going to get better sitting on the bench. All of that said, Waggy is clearly making a contribution based on effort which i appreciate even if it frustrates the hell out of me watching him. It would be churlish not to admit that. However, he won't be good enough next year in the next league up. I believe Green might be. Cook had a few moments of genuine class yesterday but is not match fit. Waggy running around doing his demented thing on the left is an alternative option to cook if JJ remains out. We have no other credible option. I still think Waggy is not a winger. His battling qualities might mean that he could play a a striker or in the hole. Fair play to him for his efforts at the moment. But I'm not a great fan. Sorry.
Waggy could play as a central attacking midfielder 'in the hole' if you stick a purely defensive Hughes/Semedo type player behind him. a 4-3-1-2 type formation...
With time & temperance Green will be good enough for the Championship... Although you're right he has classic second division hair (ie blonde tinted spikey choppy with a bit of a mullet too) - I think it's called the 'Darren Ward' and I remember the whole of Doncaster Rovers sporting it in much the same vain (literally) as the Romanians.
Green's decision making and reading of the game means at the moment he isn't good enough for the Champ. Wagstaff's weaknesses are more obvious but Green also has plenty he needs to work on himself. Wagstaff isn't a an out and out winger, but neither was John Robinson. Even Man Utd have hard working energetic players that aren't typical wingers in Park and Kuyt.
Both need to step up if they want to play next season. Currently, I still have more faith in Green being able to. Would people be confident if we started next season (in the Championship) with these two as our only options on the right? I think it might be a situation where one has to go and sign a player who has experience of the Championship (and ideally, further up).
The Sun league 1 team of the week includes...Waggy today and got our highest marks for saturdays game.
