Nobody is saying you aren't passionate. Your an Arsenal fan, I get that. Being a fan of Arsenal involves a great deal of emotion for you just as it would to any Arsenal fan.

But what I am saying is matches like Spurs and Chelsea can't involve as much emotion to you as it would to someone that embraces the culture of the club (i.e supporter) or better yet a local.

I would guarantee the same with other rivalries, take the Manchester and Merseyside Derby's for example.

I would guarantee that beating City would mean far more to Manc-B&B United fans than it would to a United fan that lived in London. To a London-based United fan beating Arsenal and Chelsea would be far more important, I know this from experience.

Same for Liverpool. To a Liverpool fan B&B there, beating Everton would be huge. To somebody outside the area it would probably be insignificant compared to a win over United, Arsenal or Chelsea. A Liverpool mate of mine who lives a few doors away from me (Korean) said he hates Chelsea more than any other team - mainly because of me <laugh> That doesn't surprise me because where we live Chelsea is by far and away the most supported team so he is surrounded by Chelsea fans, he doesn't know an Everton fan and doesn't know many United.

Part of being a supporter/match-goer is embracing the culture of the club, this is something you have to experience and something that is learnt, not natural.

That's fair enough, it's only an opinion. Neither of us can be wrong on this one <ok>

Whats not to see ?? It is logical. How would someone from a foreign country who doesn't get the demographic of North London on a derby day .. the Seven Sisters road that links Arsenal to Tottenham - have the same level of emotion as someone who knows it like the back of his hand ? How would he know anything about getting a tube from Seven Sisters to Finsbury Park or Highbury to the emirates on derby day and seeing the glare of Spurs fans en route also ?

How would they know about the shops on Green Lanes the fans of which are mostly Spurs or Arsenal ... and the emotion that runs leading up to derby day ? How would they know about going to school with junior Gunners telling stories of their exploits, filthy songs sung and running battles with rival supporters ?

He wouldn't possibly know about the elation of walking home from the stadium, through estates, taking back roads home, or the utter depression of walking back home, stepping in front of moving cares in a defiant way cos you just don't give a damn lol.

I'm an AS Roma fan, I've been to see them play twice, once at home and once away. I love Roma, do you think I can say I have emotional links to Roma compared to those that live in Rome ?? Of course not. Unless I lived there I wouldn't feel the same as those who do, feeling the build up to derby games V Lazio ... its massive.

    This <ok>

If someone hasn't been to a single game to watch the club they support, they will have nowhere near as much emotion as somebody who has grown up in the surrounding area(s) or spent thousands of pounds going to watch that club for years on end going through everything with people in the same boat.

Roma fans, now they are passionate <laugh> I went to the San Siro to watch Milan vs Roma once and visited a nearby McDonalds, an after match meal I'll never forget <laugh>

Drogs, it baffles me. Me dad is African and growing up through the 70s and 80s Brazil was his team - as it was for pretty much every black family I knew - Brazil being the most exciting to watch and having black players. But when West African sides started qualifying for the World Cup they became the teams my dad supported - even if he would always have a soft spot for Brazil. There is no possible way, at any time, could the emotion my dad and co felt for Brazil be anything like that of actual Brazilians !!!! How could it be ?!!

you missed the 3rd option which is a combination of the 2 - someone from the area who also fell in love with the club. That happens when it is in your blood.

its sad when idiots start telling other people in not so many ways that they are not as bigger fans as themselves...and then you start getting technical by saying one is a fan the other is a supporter...id like to know what the diffrence is!

is the supporter the one who is willing to go into debt to support a business? whilst the fan sticks to the romantic notion of wearing the replica shirt and shouting their team's name whilst watching his team however possible?

you might get more stick because your surrounded by fans or as the new term on here suggests 'supporters' pf the oppo team..or you get braggin rights so you can tke the piss out of your work colleuge...that really does not make you a bigger fan...what a snobby bloody attitude..not being content with fellow fans...some need to big themselves up by saying they are bigger fans for one reason or another....must be empty people!

i tell you sumt.....if i had the choice of spending 50 quid to watch my team or spending it on my son...i know where the money would go..boo hoo..what a poor fan/supporter/bum licker/brown noser/nationalist etc etc.... i am<doh>

and if you buy a replica shirt from north london or you buy a replica shirt from Africa...so long as they are genuine..then you do your club the same service...and the club tke your money regardless...yet there are people having a 'my dad is bigger than your dad' debate <doh>

p.s i like to buy my replica shirts from china..just as good and 40 quid cheaper......thats 40 quid more to spend on myself and my family etc..instead of helping a multimillion puond business which is forever feeding fat people(if you get what i mean)

yet some on here want to be known as bigger fans...oops i mean supporters...ffs!

so long as your a fan...stop telling others they are not...or are not as 'bigger' fans...you think you deserve a medal because you live a stone throw away?....i bet you wouldnt even get a free fkin match.....yet the likes of me who lives 2 hours away from my club can never be a 'total' fan/supporter? <doh>

and i do know the elation of walking down Seven sisters.....about waiting in the ground watching my team warm up...cheering their fukin names as they are called out...popping into the merchandise shop...catching the tube...but i live 2 hours away so some of you think you can take that away by claiming you **** on your clubs doorstep so your better fans? get fukin real...and my last venture to the holy grail was on tuesday to watch Spurs get to wembley against Bolton...my day started at 1pm..and i didnt get into bed toll 3am wednsday morning/tuesday night due to travelling so id say fuk you cos im the bigger fan/supporter..more so than you lazy basterds who conveniently support the nearest team to them so they dont have to go far to watch them

see what i did there with the last paragraph? <doh> disrespectful sad individuals<ok>

    sad fukers.

You lack the intelligence to get involved in debates such as this.

Nobody is saying you are any more or less of a fan if you don't live near the club or can't attend matches, we're just saying you can't be a supporter, which is true.

Football clubs are part of the community to which a club is based which is the point Hothead is trying to make. <ok>

    Exactly.

I was in Spain when they won the Euro's (their first major trophy) and the scenes there were amazing. Anyone that has been to Spain will tell you how politically and culturally divided it is due to reasons backdated years and all that was put a side and scenes of elation around Spain unfolded. I had wanted Spain to win throughout and like the country as I have visited it more times than any other outside England of course, but for me I'm not Spanish and have no connection with the country or its culture, it couldn't mean more for me than it does to someone Spanish.

I come from a West Indian family and my uncles are mad about Cricket, when they were whitewashed by England by uncles wouldn't speak for days, it deeply hurt their pride as West Indian people. Whilst I would consider myself West Indian too, I was born and bred here as were my parents therefore it did not hurt them as much as it did my uncles partly because my parents embraced British culture and over here, Cricket isn't even ranked in the top 3 sports. If I was born and bred in the West Indies or spent a significant amount of time there my sentiment towards cricket would be different.
